USC Morning Buzz: Life About To Get Tougher

Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham said Tuesday that he expects to have to use silent counts on offense for most road games in the Big 12 this season.

“I’m fired up to be in a league and . . . have sold out crowds of people lining the gates to get in. Screaming, passionate, loud.”

If that is the case, imagine what USC and Lincoln Riley are going to be in for with the Big Ten. Fortunately, it’s only three road games (Michigan, Minnesota, Maryland).

  • The USC Alumni Assn. summer newsletter came out yesterday with this statement:

“Believe it or not, we’re fast approaching USC’s Big Ten debut on September 1, when the Trojans take the field against the LSU Tigers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.”

Who knew USC-LSU was a Big Ten game?

  1. “Crowds who are sceaming, passionate and loud,” which is not the L.A. Coliseum where the locals would find it unbecoming to show such emotions

  2. Come on Scott, that sentence is not necessarily contradictory because 2024 does represent SC’s entry into the ‘Big-10’ although they start with playing non Big-10 teams

  4. In other news, the New Zealand woman who was killed while shopping in Newport Beach refused to give up her shopping bags to the assailants who then ran her over.

It is wise to give up your belongings, even your car, if a desperate man points a gun at your head

    2. Hopefully, this tragic and horrific crime results in George Gascon losing LA County DA election in November.

George and all his supporters are pure evil.

      1. Aesthetic Update:

Los Angeles and San Francisco Dems are never put off by photos of the upper echelon of their District Attorney’s Offices cuz they see the same assemblage every time they hold a Pride Parade….

      2. Oh fuc it —in fairness I should point out this case has nothing to do with Los Angeles —-however…. it’s also worth noting the 3 individuals charged with MURDER have refused to show up for arraignment –both last Friday and last Monday….. and genius Judge Manssourian has expressed concern about the possibility of going forward…instead of having them dragged in by their hair….

      3. Yes, but the oldest McCrary (26) has prior felony convictions for residential burglary in 2018, criminal threats in 2020, and robbery in 2023, all in Los Angeles County. The other two are both 18, so their priors are sealed.

It is on Gascon that McCrary is on the streets!

    1. He might have to keep dreaming because Maiava has better t00ls in his t00l box. The spring game gave us a sample size of what this kid brings.

Watch his UNLV highlights, very impressive. He was ready to go to Georgia and USC pulled a rabbit out of its hat and got him to change his mind. By the third game, he should be the clear starter.

      1. Maiava certainly comes closer to Riley’s concept of the Ideal QB than Miller. He’s able to make more throws into tighter windows, has faster feet. And Riley probably intends to do exactly what you predicted: dump Miller by game three and go with Maiava. But I think he’ll be making a mistake. He’ll only be proving he doesn’t value loyalty or team dynamic [the players on offense like and look up to Miller].

I think Riley is the one who needs to change this year…not the starting QB.

      2. It is great to have Moss and Maiava competing. If Miller can bring back his Holiday Bowl magic, then he is the guy. I love his quick release, his ability to throw into a tight window, his ability to throw finesse passes, his arm strength. But his spring practice wasn’t as good as I hoped for. Either O-line was not ready or D-line is much better under new management. Maiava is much bigger and is a better run threat than Miller.

The big (perennial) question is the O-line. Also, who will emerge as the breakout RB? I see lots of talent in the two TX sophs (Joyner and Peterson), but I am guessing the Miss St transfer (Marks) will be the guy, at least to start the season.

      3. A new, more physical football environment awaits Riley. His belief in the winning powers of a highly talented QB throwing to highly talented receivers is gonna get severely tested. For the first time in a long time, I believe we’re gonna need leadership more than running skills at the QB position [you need both, obviously, but it’s a matter of emphasis]. Plugging a transfer into Miller’s spot simply because he better fits Riley’s Oklahoma model is a risk.

I will say this — we have a better shot at coming back after falling behind with Maiava at QB. He certainly has that Big Play potential Riley loves. But, as far as overall leadership, toughness and football smarts, it’s hard to improve on Miller Moss.

      4. Similar to Spencer Rattler, Caleb came along and the rest was history. Riley saw something in Maiava that perhaps he wasn’t getting from Miller.

From my own eye test, Maiava looks the part better. He’s a big guy with deceptive speed who can take a hit and move the chain with his legs. If the O-line struggles you’re going to need a mobile QB. I can see Miller taking sacks due to lack of mobility and smaller stature……just my opinion

    1. Looking at the probable lineups for both the LSU & Michigan games there’s no reason for despair — we have the talent to hang with both. After that we have plenty of opportunities to beat up on teams — only Penn State and Notre Dame [not Washington] look better than us on paper….

  6. Snotty, I mean Scotty, USC is in the Big Ten. Get it it. It is their debut since joining the Big Ten. Every Big Ten team will play teams from OOC but they will still be playing as a Big Ten School. Hope that helps.
