If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

It’s always nice to find a clear photo from the 1950’s. Here’s USC tailback Bob Levingston taking a carry against Baylor in the Trojans’ 17-8 victory over Baylor in 1959 at the Coliseum. Levingston is a Los Angeles High School graduate, like Dustin Hoffman, George Takei and Marilyn McCoo.

  • Lincoln Riley doesn’t want to play LSU. What would happen if he coached in 1964? The Trojans played Oklahoma, Michigan State, Texas A&M and Ohio State.

Oklahoma and Ohio State were each ranked No. 2 in the nation when they played USC that season.

USC vs. No. 2 Oklahoma in 1964
  • USC yell kings count out cards and distribute them in the rooter section for card stunts at the Coliseum in 1937.
  • Here’s the finished product from the same game in 1937. This was before Traveler or even the first horse mascot, Rockazar. This is actually a tribute to the Wooden Horse of Troy.
  • Jesse Owens won the 100 meters for Ohio State in a meet against USC at the Coliseum in 1935. Owens won three other events that day, including the 200 meters, but the Trojans defeated the Buckeyes in the dual meet.

A DIFFERENT WORLD

  • Bob Mathias was only 17 when he won a gold medal in the decathlon at the 1948 Olympics.

Three years later, in 1951, he tried football and is seen here breaking a 96-yard TD run for Stanford against USC.

A DIFFERENT WORLD, PART II

  • Chick Hearn famously broadcast USC games on the radio in 1958.

Who else did USC games in the 1940’s-50’s?

Al Helfer, Frank Bull, Tom Harmon (father of Mark Harmon) and L.A. Times sports colmnist Braven Dyer were among those who did games.

Bull was also the stadium announcer for the Los Angeles Rams home games in the 1950s and into the early 1960’s.

By 1947, Bull had been doing college football games for 20 years and was considered “the dean of Southern California sportscasters.”

Here’s a sample of Bull and Mark Scott (the host of Home Run Derby) doing the 1953 USC-Notre Dame game. Bull starts talking around the 1:10 mark.

Bull did USC games from the 1920’s to the 1950’s.

  • This fact always blows me away: On Sept. 24, 1932, seven L.A. stations broadcast the USC-Utah game. A week later, seven stations did the USC-Loyola of Los Angeles game.

Maybe that explains how Morley Drury, the “noblest Trojan of them all” was doing USC games in 1930 at the age of 27.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

Marianna Hill made movies with Elvis Presley (Paradise, Hawaiian Style) and Clint Eastwood (High Plains Drifter) and was in the The Godfather, Part II. She also did well-known episodes of Star Trek and The Outer Limits.

VIDEOS OF THE WEEK

In honor of Bob Newhart, who died at age 94 on Thursday, here’s a scene where he accidentally called his wife (Mary Frann) on the second series, “Emily.” Of course, Emily was the name of his wife on his first series (Suzanne Pleshette).

  • In the 1970’s, Saturday nights were must-see TV with Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, All in the Family and Carol Burnett.
  • You’ll never convince me TV is better today compared to daytime Saturday viewing in 1977.

Here is Oct. 8, 1977: The Dodgers played the Phillies in the NLCS at 12 p.m. PT on Channel 4. USC played Alabama at 12:50 p.m. on Channel 7. Not to mention American Bandstand at 11:30 a.m. on Channel 7; Soul Train at 1:30 p.m. on Channel 11 and The Outer Limits at 2:30 p.m. on Channel 11.

  1. Don’t give up on modern television quite yet, Scott, for we may be getting up to 6 college football games on Saturdays

      1. Gabby,

I have been urged by the Pope [as well as every secular leader in the world] to call balls and strikes. It is now my pleasant duty to announce the following:

Everything written by Scott, So Cal, Tim, Pasadena, Plow Horse, Karma, Alv, Charles, Bourbon and me is a strike.

Everything written by you is a ball.

  2. Yeah, Coach McKay in 1964 should have taken the Wiley approach and cut back on all those tough games because of the games Scott mentioned SC lost half of them

  3. You have to enjoy sucking trump’s cock to listen to the chopped-up rambling BS, invoking the 25th is the logical thing to do. The guy can’t stay on point and focus, obviously in severe mental decline. This is the best that maga offers (pathetic)

  5. Bitin: I still think I have a chance of winning if your JD Vance’s past comments keep coming out about you being another “cynical Nixon” and “Never Trump”

Stump: Doesn’t matter the guy changed his tune, and besides, your only chance of winning was if that Crooks kid had been a better shot
