USC Morning Buzz: Beware The Noise As Practice Beckons

It’s officially the first week of practices, as USC starts Friday at 7 a.m. at Howard Jones Field.

I’m going to keep track how many times Lincoln Riley (and anyone else in the program) talks about ignoring the “noise” from the outside.

Noise means anything that is said that a coach doesn’t like. Clay Helton used to love the term too. It’s an attempt to delegitimatize arguments or criticism, whether those counter-points are justified or not.

Like last season, when Riley tried to defend the defense, the criticisms were “noise.”

  • Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports quoted my article for Lindy’s college football preview magazine, where I wrote: “Who imagined a year ago that Lincoln Riley could already find himself on the hot seat after he won 11 games in his first season?”

Dodd’s response? “Hot seat? That’s too far but Riley wasn’t hired to get pushed around by Utah.”

  • Former USC wide receiver Jordan Addison might face a three-game suspension with the Minnesota Vikings following his arrest earlier this month on suspicion of driving under the influence, depending on the legal resolution of his case.

Three? That was the number USC unretired for Addison to play his lone season with the Trojans.

  4. It is not necessarily the content of the “noise” that bothers coaches so much but rather how the ‘noise’ is delivered, usually in a shrill insulting manner. Instead of writing that ‘The SC defense stinks,’ it could be said that the ‘SC defense is only 2 linebackers and 3 linemen away from greatness’

  5. — Hard not to like the Dodgers’ Ohtani aka ‘O’ when he goes a dismal 0 for 4 yesterday in the ‘Bum’s’ win and yet he walked once, scored a run and stole a base, yes, ‘Ol Slug’ can run too

  6. –Liked Dodd’s thoughts on Wiley getting fired and on the ‘hot seat’ when he said he “wouldn’t go that far” This is a relief to the SC Football-Powers knowing they still owe the guy $80-million

Maroon, you are just a Maroon. Was I talking to you, you idiot? No, but just like a women, that you want to be, you start talking to me. What part don’t you understand of, that you are not wanted here? What would you do if you did not have this board to communicate? You can be abused like a pineta so many times, which you enjoy. Now, read real slow, so your feeble Biden mind can understand, only speak when you are spoken to. Now put duc tape over your fingers and hands so you can’t type. What a Maroon

  9. J-Rob 1 left 42 years ago. We had 9 years with Pete, but other than that, false promises. Seems like we are overdue for a good run. I can’t imagine a coach being worried about “noise”…maybe we will need to wait longer.

  10. Finally football begins as Scott must be thinking ‘no more tinkering with small-town ideas,’ now I got the real deal

Problem is that in ‘getting here’ took its toll on readership who much like the aftermath of a Civil War battle leaves ‘bodies’ lying about everywhere you look

  12. Although it is August and time for college football practice there won’t be much news out of Wiley’s Camp because Wiles likes to play it ‘close and tight,’ but then comes September and it is “Bombs Away’ is his plan

  13. –Guess we better get used to SC not being Top-10 material, especially based on their dismal recruiting. In fact, this year’s 2024 team might be the best the Trojans have over the next 2-3 years
