Even though the NCAA eased restrictions on the numbers of on-field coaches, Lincoln Riley has not hired a special teams coach.
Instead, he is continuing to use special teams analyst Ryan Dougherty, worked with Riley at Oklahoma (2017-21) and then came to USC last season.
So Riley is going with what he is comfortable with. We’ll see how that works out but Riley was raving Friday about the kickers.
“Our numbers the first part of camp, I get it’s practice, were as good as Coach Dougherty and I have ever had in all the years and places we’ve been in terms of percentage,” Riley said.
Like I said, we’ll see.
- Do people realize how much it will cost USC to fully fund the NCAA’s new scholarship limits? For example, if football goes to 105 scholarships, we’re talking about roughly $2 million more in costs.
Riley said Friday he would definitely give out partial scholarships, which will be allowed. I’m a little dubious on that because a football player on partial at USC still needs to pay $32,000 in tuition only. UCLA would be just more than $7,000.
This is what has made life so difficult for baseball.
Speaking of baseball, it can add 20 scholarships. If USC did that, we’re talking approximately $2 million. I can’t imagine Jen Cohen is thrilled with those costs but USC will have to do it to keep up with the SEC schools, etc.

Wiley is thinking “I’ve never had a ‘Special Teams’ coach and nobody is going to tell me different”– And raging and raving about his kickers’ percentages in the first week for crying out loud. It seems the guy is hanging on for dear life

I believe $22-million is available for ALL scholarship athletes, and the tricky part is how to distribute those kids’ money. I expect a fight

Wait. Let me see if I have this straight. NCAA eases restrictions on the number of sideline coaches, but USC still has no dedicated special teams coach? Wow. Just, just… Wow.
I bet the number of “towel waver” coaches didn’t go down… LR is nothing if not predictable in this sense…
The correct answers (from the answer key) are:
1. USC should indeed have a dedicated special teams coordinator/coach.
2. USC should NOT have ANY towel wavers on its sideline.
3. USC should also NOT have a DJ in the Coliseum (it so cheapens the experience)…
Prediction on LR’s grade on this three-question quiz for this season?:
F- (eff-minus)
