Saturday Buzz: Nick Saban Loves USC

College GameDay likes Ohio State, of course, to win the Big Ten.

But Nick Saban was bullish on USC.

“I really think USC, who people are kind of disrespecting now, Lincoln Riley is always going to have a good offense, I don’t care who the quarterback is, he’ll make it work.

“And now that they have this new defensive coordinator . . . who really turned UCLA around a year ago, if they can play defense, they’re going to challenge some of these teams in the Big Ten.”

  1. That’s Saban for you, always kissing up to SC except when he plays them

It is a tad ironic that Ohio St is picked to win the BIG, and yet its Coach Day is on the ‘hot seat’ after losing 3 in a row to Michigan

  2. I hope Saban is right about the defense. UCLA’s defensive stats last year are really good on paper, but they were padded by playing Coastal Carolina, North Carolina Central, SDSU, and Stanford. On the plus side, they held Utah to 14. Fingers crossed that D’Anton is the indeed the defensive guru…

      1. But UCLA giving up 33 to Cal was much better than USC giving up 49 to the Golden Bears (and nearly 51 if not for a failed 2 pt. conversion at the end). And Oregon State had a pretty potent offense before losing to the No. 5 and No. 6 teams in back to back weeks. But it was still good enough for Michigan State to hire away Jonathan Smith for HC from the Beavers.

    1. If the defensive players know the scheme and line up properly it will be an improvement over Grinch. Not running the stupid stunts with the defensive line all slanting to the left while the ball carrier goes to the right will help the defense. And having linebackers who shed blocks and tackle and defensive backs who cover will definitely be an improvement over Grinch’s crew. Agree with Saban. The new coaches and transfers make this an entirely different unit.

  4. Heading to Vegas for game next Sunday. Last two “Vegas” games I’ve been at for USC, against Gonzaga for b-ball & PAC 12 championship (why didn’t you put in Moss after Caleb got hurt?!) against Utah have been disasters!

  5. Saban was a better coach than analyst as his No. 3 pick for rhe eventual Playoffs Florida St has already bitten the dust. He also likes LSU in the playoffs which means he believes they will beat SC

  6. it’s the Jimmy and the Joes, not the X’s and O’s, and of all people, Nick Saban should know that. Lincoln Riley and and his staff are average recruiters at best. So unless they have a magic wand 🪄 to wave over the below average defensive, and offensive fronts, the USC Trojans will finish in the middle of the pack or under 500.

  7. Pete Carroll came back to USC to check out Danton Lynn and the other coaches. He wants a head coaching job in the NFL. This staff can win if they teach and develop depth while solving problems. Pete is going to take whomever he thinks will help him win in the NFL. Including Riley if Sean McVay leaves the Rams.

  8. Saban compliments USC. Obviously, that old vulture would take the Trojan job and help USC by not having to get bought out of his Alanama contract. Felt said he’ll no to Meyer but would sleep with Saban to get him to replace Riley.

Chickensh*t Gabby: When you insult my wife and mother you challenge me. Say to my face the garbage you say on this board Mr. keyboard tough guy. If you think I am an old man who you can beat up, let’s set a date at the Pasadena boxing gym. C’mon be a man.

      1. No MG. 6th and Grand is near the Biltmore Hotel, too upscale for our Gabby at this time. Ever since he developed a rash on his backside via the Monkeypox virus, he has been unable to sell himself to the Biltmore gay clientele. The canker sore on his lower lip doesn’t help either. He was roused by security and had to move east toward the LA River. He is now living in a dumpster on Santa Fe Street near the 10 freeway. When he feels up to it, he works as a “lumper” unloading fruit from trucks into the produce warehouses. Ironic, the guy who was once known as the biggest fruit on the blog now unloads fruit. Just don’t let him near the bananas.

  10. and Saban is correct…last years Bowl game vs Louisville #16 that pounded ND was a different defense from the regular season…now, after the coaching hires I expect even better results.

  11. There is a chance too much emphasis is being placed on SC’s Bowl Game win over unmotivated Louisville, certainly ‘Most’ is not ever again going to get 6 touchdowns and the defense has not had sufficient work to meld well at present

  12. Still, you got to root for SC win or lose, being a ‘Trojan’ is too much a part of us to ever completely turn our backs on the team

But this team is too thin in both ‘trenches’ to expect it to pull out games every week. However, Wiley says he has seen “substantial” progress with the players since he arrived which is good news after last year’s problems

  13. This SC-LSU game is the only show in town next Sunday, so the nation and future football recruits will be inspecting this SC team, which is the Trojans big chance to show off how much they have improved and that all that Trojan talk of ‘National Championships’ is more than talk

  14. And I wish I could be in Michigan Stadium when the Trojans come storming out of the tunnel accompanied by the booing of 100,000 fans as these Wolverines look for revenge with SC owning a 6-1 recent record against them. And hopefully SC will display some of that old-time Trojan style

  15. Rosters change so much year to year. Obviously, SC needed Defense. For the last few years, even before Riley, they were too small and too slow. They had some great moments, but they faded at the end of the games. I don’t see the teams in the Big 10 being as good as some people say. Michigan is a totally different team. Ohio St. looks pretty good. I definitely don’t see the offenses being as varied as they were in the PAC-12. It seemed like every PAC-12 team had an all world QB. That’s definitely not the case with the Big-10. We’ve got a pretty decent squad and we should have a tough but decent season. I’m not worried at all.
