  1. Some of those who didn’t play either started or got quite a few reps on the defense last year (Bryson Shaw, Raesjon Davis, Prophet Brown, Zion Branch).

  2. That is a lot of players who traveled but did not play. In such a tight tough game the coaches apparently stuck with the first stringers and a few backups, and that was it

    1. The talk is Anthony Beavers will take over for Cobb if he isn’t ready on Saturday [in other words, we’ll lose some weight but gain some speed]….

  3. How did Michigan wind up with a schedule that contains only FOUR away games?

[I have a feeling Texas is going to dampen the glamor of the USC/Michigan game by destroying Michigan this Saturday…… and, btw, USC needs to remember Utah State isn’t THAT bad]……

  6. Lincoln Riley switched from using his defense to prepare his offense to using his offense to prepare the defense. It also helps his offense to find more solutions and prevent repeated failures on defensive calls. No longer does the offense suffer from repeat failures on particular defense calls during a game. Case in point, Harold Perkins successfully blew up third down play with a simple overload blitz on Mason Murphy’s side of the line of scrimmage. It didn’t happen again with any other Tiger player on Murphy’s side. Despite repeated attempts with different looks.

I get not playing certain people but injuries (like Cobb’s) will force more people to play. Especially on defense and installations will be player specific not situation specific but important. That’s why Lynn said he had more to work with at USC than what he had at UCLA. Riley will do the same thing on offense because he has the luxury of not having to pull miracles to win games which means a more measured approach instead of relying on hero ball and most explosive plays.

  7. 73 players did not play out of how many who traveled? There are 116 players listed on the roster this season (https://usctrojans.com/sports/football/roster), meaning 43 players (at most) actually saw the field for at least 1 play – or a bit under 22 (max) if split evenly on both sides of the ball. Seems to say in most cases the starters played the whole game. So is this a depth issue, a coaching issue, or no issue? And to beg the question: how many LSU players did not play?

  8. Also, interesting point made earlier about USU. Their backup QB Bryson Barnes (formerly backup to Cam Rising at Utah, and now potentially starting for the Aggies?) seems to be comfortable as a dual-threat type, and is used to the pressure after facilitating the Aggies comeback win last week (1-0). And he wasn’t even their starter! That was Spencer Petras (formerly of the Iowa Hawkeyes) – so we don’t really know who is their QB. Still, not too worried about USC’s chances tomorrow night in the Coliseum, but good football coaching should emphasize no complacency in any game this season (we cannot get high on our own supply…).
