If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

If you have DirecTV, you know that Disney blacked out ABC and ESPN just prior to the LSU game.

The channels are still of the air. But starting Saturday night, USC is going to paint ads for DirecTV in the back of the end zone as part of a multi-year agreement.

  • There is already a T-shirt for Kyron Hudson’s memorable catch against LSU.

If you like the shirt, you can buy one at this link.

  • And now for some history:

You could write a book about Trojans in Hollywood.

But one of the most profilic behind-the-scenes Trojans was All-American tackle Jesse Hibbs. He directed 44 episodes of Perry Mason; 20 episodes of Gunsmoke; 28 episodes of The F.B.I. and countless feature films.

Jesse Hibbs (third from left) is flanked by Tony Curtis and Frank Gifford for the 1953 film, “All-American.”

Notably, he directed the 1953 football-themed film, All-American and To Hell and Back in 1955 starring Audie Murphy. The latter movie is his most well-acclaimed film.

He was an uncredited second-unit director for 1940’s Knute Rockne All American.

Jesse Hibbs directs Pat Crowley and Dani Crayne in the 1956 Western, Walk the Proud Land.
  • There is a statue of Neil Armstrong at USC because in 1970 he got his master’s degree at the university.

But hardly anyone remembers Gerald Carr, who attended Santa Ana High School and then graduated from USC in 1954. He commanded the 84-day Skylab IV mission in 1973-74.

  • The Heisman Trophy is announced in a televised ceremony on a Saturday night these days.

But back in 1979, it would be announced on a Monday morning. So when Charles White won he was actually at USC awaiting word and then went to a press conference that day at Heritage Hall.

“I wanted to come to USC and make a good impression as a man, and grow and it finally happened,” White said. “This is the students’ surprise and their award also because as I’ve said all along, when I carry the ball, I’m carrying it for the whole University of Southern California.”

I thought Gabby said a few days back that he was going to the USC marching band pep rally today at the Palms at 2:00 and wanted to “meet up” with Scott. Instead, he spent the day trolling the blog. Once again a threat followed by a no show. That’s our Cowardly Gabby. All talk, no walk.

  3. The magnificence of Hudson’s catch is not fully captured on that T-shirt. Should have shown how high he is off the turf with a player tangled up with him

  5. I have composed some nasty replies to our resident goofball —-all of which have been mercifully censored by Scott [probably to protect goofball’s feelings]. All of goofball’s stuff remains on the board. And yet goofball attacks Scott twice an hour…..

  6. So Direct TV will paint ads in the back of the endzone. Why? You can’t watch the USC game on Direct TV. Couldn’t get the PAC12 channel on Direct TV or the Dodger game.

  7. Nice photo of student body left in its heyday. Can you imagine being a 170 pound cornerback, about the size of Adoree Jackson, and seeing Brad Budde coming at you followed by Marcus Allen. As Deion Sanders once said “they don’t pay me to tackle.”

  9. Scooter,

this heat reminds me of the 1997 Purdue game with Breese and Palmer playing qb at the Coli. In the stands it was 117 degrees. On the field, it was around 123 degrees. Thank God the game is being played at 8 PM tomorrow night

  10. Charming: The taking of those Israeli hostages to use as negotiating bait placed added pressure on Israel to end the war, but I’m not sure you or I as President would have played it differently

Price: Hold it, there is no ‘you or I’ as president. When the people finally get a load of your proposed national expenditures, well, I got this one
