USC Morning Buzz: The Big Ten’s Early Problem

I spoke to a USC coach on Sunday night about the new Big Ten Conference after two weeks.

“It’s very, very early,” the coach said. “But there are a lot of teams with early issues on offense. That’s a difference from the Pac (12). You might not play the best or most physical team. (But) those teams always seemed like could score points.

  • USC’s most experienced cornerback, Jaylin Smith, suited up but did not play against Utah State. He has a knee injury. Former UCLA cornerback John Humphrey started in Smith’s spot.
  • Jonah Monheim’s backup at center, Kilian O’Connor, suffered an injury Saturday night. Gino Quinones replaced O’Connor at center.
  • Did you see LSU rushed for 64 yards against Nicholls State and averaged 3 yards per carry. So much for the Tigers having one of the best offensive lines in the country.

  1. Wow, the BIG 10 has pathetic offenses ? Who knew ? Oh wait, most people who actually watch the games knew.

SC will beat Michigan unless they are intimidated by the Big House.

SC can run the table, aside from PSU at home, who played like crap at home against Bowling Green or maybe they aren’t that good to begin with, there isn’t a tough game left on the schedule, not even ND.

This team is a TEAM, the defense is much better, could it get worse ?, and Moss is solid and a leader and NOT about himself.

      1. Ore buys talent with Nike money, but Lanning doesn’t maximize it, IMO. They didn’t have a solid win last year, unless you count the one versus USC. They beat Utah, but that was without Rising at QB. And as you pointed out, Ore had a tough time beating the Idaho teams.

      2. Boise State usually has a tough run game and can play with most teams, Idaho dropped to FCS last year or the year before, but they did make the FCS playoffs last year, still………….

And you’re right, for all the money Phil Knight spends they should be better than everyone, hopefully they continue to underachieve.

      3. Yes. Oregon buys its players. May be difficult to build team chemistry and culture when a third of your starters will leave if they get a better offer from another school. And Lanning had much more talent than Washington last year. He was outcoached.

  2. Scooter,

It was horrible to have the lights go out at the Coli. Blame Newsom and the rest of the Democrap party that run the State of Califonia like a Soviet State. The idiot wants to get rid of power plants and yet, the State needs more.

To me, it seems that SC’s offense will be sufficent in the Big 10 and if the defense continues to play the way it is, then they will be effective. We will see.

      1. I left So Cal in 96, haven’t looked back, won’t even go back to visit. It was a great place when I was a teenager, then it started going to hell in the mid 80’s.

      2. Michael, if you replace the word “bad” with “awful and comically stupid”, it may be more accurate. And while we are at it, you can add the states of Oregon and Washington.

      3. Hey! They’ve got to find some way to pay that $750K salary of the new LADW GM they hired in May, Quinones. (Her predecessor earned $447K.) I posted about it the day they announced it.

She came over from PG&E. So whoever they hired to replace her at PG&E, had to have come in close to that.

Just wait until 2026, when each of us in CA will have a FIXED component to our monthly energy bill that is tied to our annual income!! There will be 3 or 4 tiers.

  3. So the offenses are struggling in the BIG. Can’t score like they did in the PAC12. Well, hire more head coaches in the BIG like Helton and more D coordinators like Grinch. That should livin things up. Hell, a pig farmer put 42 on USC last year.

  4. I am surprised Scottie didn’t comment more on the coach’s poll. One coach has USC ranked 23rd, behind Arizona, ND, Michigan AND LSU, among many others. That is right up Scottie’s alley.

      1. Don’t know. Tyson Helton is a voter, but not his brother the village idiot. Neither Sark nor Kiffin is voting. Narduzzi from Pitt is a voter, he was all worked up a couple of years ago when Addison went to USC from Pitt in the portal.

  5. Yes, LSU did not gain even 70 yards but they only ran 21 times with their hot quarterback ‘Nutmeg’ throwing for 6 touchdowns and a chunk of yards

  6. The coaches’ poll has got SC way down there. Except for 2016 and 2022 SC hasn’t been very good since Carrot left, so maybe they’re taking a “Wait and see” approach

      1. Kelly got significantly out-coached versus USC. LSU scored just 3 in the 4th quarter as Lynn adjusted the D after halftime. BTW, did you see how Kelly chewed out his place kicker at the end of the first half when the guy missed a field goal? Kelly is feeling some pressure, and seems to have lost his Louisiana drawl that he magically developed on the flight from Indiana to Louisiana to accept the LSU job.

      2. It’s not that odd, 67. In fact, I’ve seen it happen a lot recently — a person [all of a sudden] develops a regional accent —and [just as all of a sudden] loses it…
