Morning Buzz: USC Lacks An Eraser

I used to call Caleb Williams an Eraser.

A player who could erase the mistakes of the offensive line, the defense and . . . the head coach.

Well, USC lacks an eraser this season.

There are times in games when things might go against USC. Let’s say you are unhappy with the officiating (just like you were in the Pac-12). Williams was capable of making plays that might overcome those factors.

Now? Who is the eraser? It doesn’t have to be a QB. Chris Claiborne was an eraser. I can’t remember him knocking a starting quarterback out of the game in the first quarter and USC winning.

You might say Pete Carroll was an eraser.

When he got hired, some people thought Lincoln Riley would be an eraser. LOL.

  1. If Riley ever was an eraser, the rubber is totally gone and the paper is now getting torn by the pencil’s metal ferrule.

    This is a worse mess than Helton because of Riley’s gargantuan buyout. Maybe they can turn the season around, but without Gentry on the D, it is not looking so good.

    2. We have to pray that Beavers, Lucas, Cobb and Ramsey all come through Big Time. [btw, from what I’ve seen Penn State’s O-line is not super].

  3. Wolf is right on the money. The book on CLR is very simple. He refuses to embrace the development of an offensive/defensive line, the running game, defense, or special teams, because he feels that his offense can outscore the opponent. This is true to a certain point when you have an all world QB and receivers. But that is not the case this year, or last year for that matter, because sooner or later, these shortcomings will be exposed. What is more bothersome, is that this approach has never won a NC, so why continue to use it? Because coaches like CLR are too damn stubborn to admit their shortcomings and make a change. As Einstein stated, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome.

  5. Fact is, Riley isn’t going anywhere unless some NFL team comes calling and wants him for the OC, pray for the Rams or Jets to call.

    He has zero game clock management sense, zero defensive sense, zero special teams sense, zero OL sense, zero DL sense and apparently zero recruiting sense.

    To sum up, he’s a Z E R O

    1. That’s all true — except the summation. Riley is not strictly a zero. He understands play calling [up till the redzone in big games]. He understands how to maximize his QB’s potential [within the confines of the appalling O-line that Josh Henson pieces together]. He understood [or was made to understand] the need to get a top D-Coordinator [but straps him down with a seriously bad -d-line which could have been strengthened via the portal].

      Coach Riley is not a zero. He’s a zero multiplied by three. [Which I guess is zero].

      1. He’s probably perfect for a pro job as a QB coach or an OC, he isn’t head coach material. If he fails in the pros there’s always Muleshoe HS !

  7. I am much more optimistic than others on this blog. My optimism is not based on Riley or his ability to field an offense that can score in bunches. It is based on the average quality of the rest of the teams we play. Penn State is not a great team and they are the toughest team that remains on our schedule. We can beat them if we take care of the ball. We can also beat Notre Dame. But, nothing will come easy. Most of our games will be close ones. The loss of Gentry really hurts.

    You have not talked about the dline and their lack of sacks. The problem is that Genus, (Riley) has no need for dlinemen. We can see that and I thought the new dline coach would change things up. They only have 6 sacks out of 5 games. Not too good.
