USC Sunday Buzz: How Much Time Does Lincoln Riley Need?

One excuse I’m tired of hearing is that Lincoln Riley needs time to build depth and complete an overhaul of the roster. Let’s look at the teams USC lost to:

  • Washington lost 21 of 22 starters and beat Michigan last week.
  • Does anyone think Minnesota has a better roster than USC?
  • Did Penn State look like the No. 4-ranked team in the nation?

Riley is in Year 3. In the old days, it was believed a coach needed three years to build a program. But that was before the transfer portal. Now, some pundits are saying Riley needs to get to Year 4 to revive the program.

Does anyone feel better about USC today than in Year 1 of the Riley Era?

  • Is D’Anton Lynn going to talk about how Penn State converted a fourth-and-7 and fourth-and-10 on the same drive in the fourth quarter? Even worse, both passes were to Julian Fleming. Penn State was 2 for 2 on fourth downs Saturday.

It’s a good thing USC’s defense is improved.

  1. Riley will get 10 years because at USC football no longer matters.

DEI is the most important thing to USC now, just look at what they did to the Song Girls.

I posted this again, the first one with a link is under review

  2. WHY DID USC JUST QUIETLY CHANGE THE NAME OF ITS ICONIC ‘SONG GIRLS’ DANCE TEAM?  “…going forward, the future members of this team are going to be ‘Leaders’ with no gendered phrases so as not to offend the LGBTQIA+ crowd. They are the ones for whom this was undoubtedly changed. There will no doubt be a song boy who we just refer to as a Song Leader on the team some time soon (if there isn’t already).

I am sure the next debate will be about what preferred pronouns we should be using for the Song Leaders. Do we say the Song Leaders would like to use the all-gender bathroom; or ‘Oh, this is the captain of the Song Leaders. She, I mean, the leader would like to ask for your support’?”

      1. “Unless you are from southern California, you’ve probably never heard of the Song Girls.”

WRONG. Male college football fans all over the country know and love our Song Girls. They have for decades, no matter how much they may hate USC and its football team.

  3. This is Helton 2.0. For both Helton and Riley, the first season was good because of the QB. After that, it went downhill, and then that accelerated, with both coaches being forced by the AD to make wholesale changes to their coaching staffs. That still didn’t do the trick for either one.

I am hoping “Sideline Jen” is working the alums for buyout $$$, because it looks like Riley is on the verge of losing the team.

    1. I read that Riley sounded just like Helton in the post game presser, matter of fact, no anger, we’ll get them next time.

Don’t know that Cohen has the power to do much, maybe the Jets or Rams want Riley, we can only hope at this point.

      1. I don’t know if anyone would hire him as HC, maybe as a coordinator. Can you imagine shaking down someone for $10 million, knowing that you need to shake down 6 more people for another $10 million per person?

      2. If he goes to the NFL it’ll be as an OC not a head coach but I don’t see any NFL team paying his buyout.

SC is not going to pay him 70 million to go away, not sure they care if he’s 8-5, 6-6, 5-7 or whatever these days.

I said he could go 2-5 in his last 7, he got one in the L column yesterday.

      3. Even if he was paid $2 million as a coordinator, which is probably above the market price, the buyout would still be $8 million per year.

      4. Exactly. USC has an $8 billion plus endowment. If my math is right, Riley’s buyout is under 1 percent of that.

      5. But Spielberg is a Life Trustee and has given $100 million to USC already. Surely he can do another Indiana Jones or ET sequel and give us $70 million to rid ourselves of Helton Part 2.

      1. They waited 3 years to use all the great material our current administration provided! Italy and India’s versions of SNL didn’t. They have been making fun of Dementia Joe from the start and laughing that 81M “Americans” (supposedly) were stupid enough to vote for that.

Going to be so hilarious if it happens again.

  4. Write football commentary at your peril around here, but I didn’t see Wiley on the field for the two 4th down do-or-dies

  5. The Penn St kicker had one of the great sports lines when asked what he was thinking about when he won the game with his field goal– “All I was thinking about was how I was going to celebrate after I made the kick”

  6. Our lads played their hearts out yesterday. Painful to lose but the team is still our team. Nobody likes excuses but Riley is very close to being undefeated.
