USC Morning Buzz: Is This Worth $12-13 Million?

I’m not a big stats guy but here’s a couple things for the annoying segment of people who seem to do nothing but defend Lincoln Riley (and D’Anton Lynn).

USC defense yards per play: 5.8 yards.

UCLA defense yards per play: 5.3 yards.

Both teams played Penn State, LSU and Minnesota. UCLA also played Oregon and Indiana, who are undefeated. USC played Michigan and Wisconsin. Is the $2 million kid delivering? The fanboys will still say yes or blame the players.

  • Lincoln Riley, Deion Sanders and Billy Napier are all 5-8 in their past 13 games.
  • Here is Lincoln Riley on Trojans Live on Monday:

“We know we have a good football team. We don’t need other people’s opinions or what they think.”

The problem is this tends to be Riley’s attitude on everything. He knows more than you. He doesn’t need to know what other people think, which includes talking to USC fans (public, boosters, donors, students, faculty/staff) who actually want to support him.

Now if you want to donate some a million dollars to his fancy football facility, he might entertain a short conversation with you.

Pete Carroll knew more than you too. But he embraced the community. Riley disdains it.

  • Today is Richard Carpenter’s 78th birthday. So let’s enjoy the Carpenters for a few minutes.

  1. Since the blog refuses to accept my original comment, just know this

ucla had better defensive stats against both PSU and Minnesota than USC did

  2. Wiley perhaps doesn’t “disdain” the public so much as he feels uncomfortable in dealing with it, especially now that he is under the critics’ microscope

    1. Woody from Toy Story- aka Lincoln Riley has shown us all we need. He’s incapable of making impactful in game adjustments, cant recruit to save his life with the exception of QB’s and receivers, devoid of a real coaching presence on the sideline, seems to not be in touch with reality, and he doesn’t really hold himself, much less the team accountable for all the details they keep missing. Good coaches don’t keep missing the little things- clock management, play calling in a timely manner, player execution etc.. Dan Lanning- coach of O, is so in tune with clock management- he had his team purposely put 12 men on the field to take a penalty and eat up 4 more seconds on the clock- perhaps those extra 4 seconds would have given Ohio state enough time to kick a field goal. A good coach catches those details- LR had trouble figuring out how to best use his 3 timeouts with all the time in the world to get a field goal to end the game. And we wound up rushing the offense because they were running out of time- complete buffoonery. Unfortunately, we are stuck with this jack a$$. So, we will be stuck with 3 star and sometimes 4 star recruits for the balance of his tenure here and a head coach that can’t get out of his own way. In the immortal words of Charlie Brown- “We’re Doomed”

  3. Despite the record and statistics this is an SC team that has been in every game to the end, so as showbiz people ask, “Were you not entertained” but for the conclusion

  4. LR does have a great team. Problem: he is not a “finishing” coach, and takes a touchdown off the board every game he is on the sideline.

  5. As much as people want to defend Lincoln Riley we all know he won’t last the years left on his contract. His running from physical football philosophy has been, and will continue to be glaring in Big Ten play. Even the less talented teams have out physical the Trojans in the trenches. The Mike Leach system is strictly for entertainment and statistics, not championship football. Riley and TCU’s Sonny Dykes will always don’t seem to understand the benefits of running the football, it controls the clock, protects the leads, and gives your defense a rest.

  6. Part of the problem with Wiley is that this is the first time as a head coach he has faced serious adversity, starting with last year. In 5-years at OK he was 56-10 and never had more than 2-losses. So he is navigating new waters here and so far appears to be drowning in it

    1. IF YOU’RE GOING TO PLAGIARIZE, WHY NOT STEAL FROM THE BEST? Kamala Harris accused of plagiarizing Martin Luther King in her book.
