When Lincoln Riley was looking for a defensive coordinator, one of the issues was whether any candidates (like Jim Leonhard) would enjoy Riley’s aversion to playing complementary football.
In other words, do you want to coach the defense when Riley doesn’t care how much time his defense is on the field? Or doesn’t call plays to run some clock and give the defense a rest?
Well, look at this chart:
You think D’Anton Lynn is happy his defense is on the field 68 snaps a game?
Did Riley give the defense a break on Friday night when he called 20 running plays against Rutgers?
Think about that three-play possession in the fourth quarter against Michigan. Or some of those quick possessions against Minnesota and Maryland. It’s all part of Riley Ball.

This is the major problem with these offensive “gurus”. They refuse to accept the fact that when you run the ball and shorten the game it helps your defense. Your defense is good when they are playing between 55-60 snaps a game. Anything more, you’re asking for trouble. We saw this when sark took over and he wanted to run an up tempo offense and run close to 75 plays a game. At the end of games against lesser opponents USC’s defense had to hang on because they were exhausted from taking too many snaps.

I thought Gabby said a few days back that he was going to the USC marching band pep rally today at the Palms at 2:00 and wanted to “meet up” with Scott.
Instead, he spent the day trolling the blog. Once again a threat followed by a no show.
