USC Morning Buzz: The Defense Rests

Has anyone heard from USC defensive line coach Eric Henderson?

No sacks from his unit against Washington. Does anyone think Huskies QB Will Rogers is fast?

According to Pro Football Focus, only one defensive end had a quarterback pressure against Washington (Sam Greene). Braylan Shelby (42 snaps), Jamil Muhammad (32) and Kameryn Fountain (30 snaps) combined for zero pressures.

Now most of these players are young and some will develop. But what irritates me is the way some media have been overhyping them before they do anything ON THE FIELD.

I don’t care if they look huge crossing the street to Howard Jones Field or look good during an individual drill. I want to see them play football. Make a play. This is such an affliction with USC: An exaggerated view of players who haven’t earned a thing.

It creates unwarranted expectations. This is a small point but why was I the only one to point out Bear Alexander was not assured of starting at Georgia during spring drills when he decided to leave the SEC program?

Why do fans need to hear about how anyone looks in pads? We want to know if they can play in pads.

Meanwhile, the media is transfixed by “Coach Henny.” Is his group performing? It’s harder when you don’t have Aaron Donald.

  1. The run defense is much better than last year. Anthony Lucas improved over last year. Gavin Meyer and Nate Clifton have had productive years. The interior guys are not expected to have many pressures or sacks. But agree with Scott that we need an elite edge rusher. Braylon Shelby would appear to have all the physical attributes but has underperformed. He is still young but I am growing inpatient with him.

  2. Scooter,

Why isn’t the Board of Trustees call Folt the Dolt, Jen, Taco Lita, Cohen, and Riley on the carpet and examine the path that SC football is going. You have not heard from Cohen, so that means either she has a been and chees burrito in her mouth, or this is above her head. Folt is too busy trying to make SC into a Political Crtap Wokeness school and collect every penny out of everyone. Riley is way over his head. He is a medicore ocordinator. The Board needs to put pressure on all three and produce. Inform Folt that her contract will not be renewed unless things improve iwth the school and with the football team. Same with Cohen and Riley. Tell Riley a buy out will be in order in the next couple of years if he is not winning championships. Tell him that he will be paid $0millions for the buyout due to failing performance per the contract.

The big time boosters need to organize and tell Cohen and Folt, not more money until things improve. If the money is cut off, the Folt and the rest of her merry gang will be gone.
