USC Saturday Buzz: Ready For New Look?

Good morning.

Here’s one of my favorite USC-Nebraska stories. Tailback Johnny Rodgers, a native of Omaha, Neb., wrote a letter to USC when he was in high school saying he wanted to play for the Trojans.

A USC assistant coach in charge of out-of-state recruiting read the letter and never got back to Rodgers and didn’t tell John McKay about the talented player. So Rodgers went to Nebraska, won the Heisman Trophy in 1972 and became a two-time consensus All-American.

The assistant coach shall remain nameless but it wasn’t one of the well-known coaches under McKay (of course).

  • Who do you pick for today’s game? The line has dropped the past few days from USC being a 9.5-point favorite to 7.5 points. Now you can pick the score.
  • Here’s how the Coliseum field looks for today’s game.

  1. Rodgers ended up being arrested for being part of a gas station robbery while he was at Nebraska and had run ins with the law afterwards, USC dodged a bullet

  2. “This place gives you goosebumps,” talking about the Memorial Coliseum of course, my best memories are of the crowd noise, the screaming of 70,000-fans is indescribable

  3. I have been approached by Nebraska people when wearing my ‘Huskers t-shirt with Johnny Rogers electrifyingly carrying the ball. He was one of a kind

  4. The SC-Neb score?– who knows?– a turnover here, a 15-yard penalty there, and the game swings another way

A lot is riding with SC’s ‘Second Stringer’ quarterback, so I’d be happy if he has SC within striking distance in the 4th quarter, and pulls it off after a rocky start– SC 27 Neb 24

    1. I find that if I don’t capitalize surnames, then the chances of a post flying under the radar are much higher. Or maybe the key is to include the word “goat” in the post? Those seem to get through.

  5. Rodgers had a severe addiction problem. Gary Beban who became friends with him through their Heisman connection, helped him enormously over the years.

    Trojans 30, Huskers 27

    Win one for J Rob

  6. They have not played like they should win…but with new q/b they may. They can always put back in the old q/b which I think would mean a loss for sure.
