USC Morning Buzz: This Week’s Burning Question

I’ve got one question this week: Will Lincoln Riley go through the motions on Saturday the way he did in last year’s Crosstown Rivalry?

In my mind, it was his worst performance since he arrived at USC. He acted like he didn’t care on the sideline and the team reflected his attitude. I can’t imagine he will want to lay an egg two straight years. But nothing he does surprises me.

  • An athletic dept. official told me it was appallling how many donors and significant season-ticket holders sold their tickets to Nebraska fans.

A USC donor told me he was quite happy to sell 3 tickets to Nebraska fans for $1,100. He doesn’t seem bothered about winning or losing this season (or most seasons). This is the problem. The Big Ten/SEC fans don’t think like this.

  • USC made former cornerback Ceyair Wright look all-world on Saturday. Jayden Maiava threw a pass right at him for a pick six and no one blocked Wright when he blocked a field goal.
  • Carol Folt and Jen Cohen enjoyed the USC-Nebraska game together in matching red.

    1. I don’t know if 5 star QBs are worth the gamble anymore, unless the recruit chooses to stay for a few years to learn the system.  It seems the top teams have QBs who stayed in the system or transfer QBs who have had playing experience.  UCLA and SC learned the hard way with their 5 stars in Dante Moore and Malachi Nelson.  Moore was beat out by Dillion Gabriel and is redshirting and Nelson is a backup at Boise State.  It seems to make more sense to get seasoned QBs from the portal like UW did with Michael Penix Jr. and Oregon has done with  Bo Nix and Dillion Gabriel

  4. I think we give our new quarterback 2 more weeks to show us he belongs. He didn’t Saturday, should have had 4 picks if the horseshoe wasn’t in his back pocket. His fundamentals are bad, footwork, throwing off back foot,ball security were exposed. I think we know moss was Riley’s sacrificial lamb to save his own rear end. This will all be washed out after notre dame, unfortunately!

      1. very good question, our last qb, currently in Chicago also has bad habits as we all know. I would say Riley identifies as a supreme play caller rather than a quarterback whisperer

      4. I wouldn’t say Riley is a supreme play caller by any means. He also has no clue on how to game plan nor manage a game in progress nor manage the clock.

    I will give this to the new qb for SC, he played not that great against a pretty good defense and the finally settled down in the second half. After fumbling the ball in the second half, he started to play with potential. I think he will improve against ugly. The nd game will be a game for him if he can play and win like he wants to.

    1. Maybe the sanctions imposed last week will help eliminate this coaching fraud from USC.

      SC’s lawyers should be pouring over Riley’s contract for anything to get rid of him at this point.

  7. Riley could go 1-2 against ucla ( Foreman may have saved him from being 0-2 already )

    1-2 against ND

    0-3 against Utah

    0-2 against Washington

    And this year he’s lost to Maryland & Minnesota

    The guy is a FRAUD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Don’t be suprised if SC loses to ugly. ugly is playing a little better. SC has a new rookie qb but the run game is coming around. SC needs to sack the qb but they have done a lousy job thi year doing that. I wonder how the two transfers from ugly will respond when they see their fomer players? Will they intercept the ball and run for a pick six or will they be nice to them? We will see.
