Lincoln Riley sounded like a football historian Tuesday night when talking about the USC-Notre Dame game.
“When you come here, the history behind this game is so epic,” Riley said. “It just is. So I just think, No. 1, I think it would be disrespectful to not be as ready as you possibly can be.”
Of course the natural follow-up question is, “If the history behind this game is epic, why do you want to end the series?”
That wasn’t asked. So Riley will play Saturday’s game and wait for the offseason before trying to convince Jen Cohen to formally end the series.
Maybe Riley will have a change of heart because USC is so bad this season that who it played in the non-conference games made no difference.
More likely, this will be a test of Cohen standing up for herself and doing her actual job as Riley’s supervisor. Shouldn’t the athletic director advise the coach that it’s not his decision, and the he should worry more about recruiting in-state talent and engaging with alumni/fans/donors?
She’s been a weak boss to this point, unwilling to set him straight on anything. The tone was set early when Riley banned a reporter last year and she did nothing to resolve the situation.
Perhaps Cohen is telling Riley behind closed doors the Notre Dame rivalry will continue, but why allow speculation to grow as Riley keeps saying the series might come to an end?

USC announced that Caleb Williams will lead the team out of the tunnel on Saturday and have a Jersey retiring ceremony. I was hoping that it would have been Matt Leinert pushed by Reggie Bush. But after Reggie just sued USC, that wasn’t going to happen.
