USC Morning Buzz: Someone Tell Riley That Real Teams Are Here

Is it lost on anyone that Oregon and Ohio State play in Pasadena tomorrow?

Two Big Ten programs that many USC fans thought the Trojans would compete with when Lincoln Riley got hired.

Well, Riley ain’t competing with them. He’s fallen further behind them. Riley is so lucky the Big Ten didn’t make him play either team this season (and he still couldn’t go .500 in the Big Ten).

But he won the Las Vegas Bowl, so some fans are thrilled. That’s another difference. Ryan Day is under intense heat from Ohio State fans (justified or not) and the guy is playing for a chance to win a national title.

Riley doesn’t face much heat at all from the public. But that’s why the Vegas Bowl drew 26,000.

Someone needs to raise the bar on Riley: Jen Cohen. The public. Anyone.

  • I’ve written previously that Deion Sanders doesn’t like to recruit California players because he thinks they are soft. There are only three players from California on the current roster.

The Buffaloes didn’t look too tough against BYU. Maybe, like Lincoln Riley, Sanders should up his game in California.

  • Do you ever notice how every player in the transfer portal sound like a star? Well, if you want agents to leak information to you, you need to pump up their clients.

Some journalists do the same thing with coaches, including run-of-the-mill assistants.

      2. It really is funny how those braindead morons didn’t notice his dementia before the last election. They were in as much denial about that as they are now about all the blood that is on their hands, for having voted for it.

  1. Scooter,

Jen, “Taco LIta”, Cohen is non-existent. How can an AD at a major and promenet school not say a word on the football team or its coaches? Do you think Garett would stay quiet? heck no. BTW, SC could use Garrett again. The football program is a dumpster fire. Fire Riley.

    1. PT: After you pay Riley the 80 million that remains on his contract, who do you replace him with? And the new coach will want his own staff so say goodbye to Lynn, Henderson, ect. All the assistants likely have buyouts worth collectively in excess of 15 million. How much are you willing to pay for the new assistants. Firing Riley is not going to happen for at least a few more years.

      1. Plow,

I figure if SC were to buy everyone out, it would cost $100 million to replace all the coaches and staff. Jen, “Taco Lita”, Cohen can’t do a thing and she sits on her hands. However, she can make it interesting by coming out and saying that SC will be tougher, stonger, and more phyiscal next year with the coach that Riley is. Put Riley on the hot seat. Make him go out and get players and get a better system.

      2. PT: About a 100 million to buy out Riley and his coaches. More than 100 million to buy a new coach and staff depending on the demand for the coach and terms of the contract. This is not a realistic option for USC at this time.

Yesterday Gabby admitted that he had no intention of appearing for a boxing match. “Nobody fights over what is said on a blog.” He was incredulous that anyone should ask for an apology. (Posting fraudulently as steveg) In Gabby’s world, men are not the protectors and providers for their families. You can insult their wives, daughters, and mothers with impunity. He has has no code of honor and therefore believes that nobody else should live by one. Although he admits that he will not back up his words with a boxing match, he has now dishonesty posted at least 10 times the exact same response about how he showed up at the gym in Miami. Is this suppose to be amusing? Please stop ruining our blog with repetitive copy and paste posts.

  2. The reality is that LR will be here for several more years.

What I would like to know is why LR can’t return to the level of coaching ability he had at OK?

Where run/pass was 50/50, not 62/38 as it is now, where his recruiting classes were inside the top 10, when he beat number 2 OSU at the shoe? Where he didn’t mismanage the game clock?

Why isn’t he as good as he was at OK? He seems to have regressed significantly, but why?

    1. Some would argue that he took Stoops players and started to run it into the ground with his.

Riley isn’t head coach material. He recruits poorly, his portal recruiting has been meh, his clock management is abysmal, his game planning is awful and he doesn’t seem to be able to get a feel for a game in progress

But, he’s probably at SC for at least 2 more years.

Look at the 2026 schedule, it’ll make you cringe how bad that season might go

    2. 67: I think Riley’s offense is dependent on an elite, dynamic quarterback. He had that at Oklahoma with Mayfield, Murray, and Williams. He did not have it this year and it showed. Further, I think defenses have adjusted to his air raid system. He rarely fooled anyone this year. Teams were calling out runs and the bubble screen before the ball was hiked. And his offensive lines at Oklahoma were superior to what he has had the past two years. It takes time to re-build an offensive line.

      1. What I find the most interesting about LR is that his play calling was 50/50 at OK with those future NFL QBs. This season, it is 62/38, with QBs who won’t be NFL starters. And by season 3, I am thinking he should have had a solid O-line…

      2. 67: Riley appears to have lost confidence in the offensive lines ability to open holes for the running game. Don’t understand why. We run better than we pass. And like you I have no idea why he is so bad at clock management. A pop warner coach could do better.

      3. Exactly. His two RBs averaged nearly 7 yards a carry. There were probably two more Ws this season, maybe more, if he had gone with a 50/50 mix.

Aside from Alabama in the 2010s, SC had that incredible run all through the 1960s and 1970s and then Pete in the early 2000s
