USC Morning Buzz: Transfer Upgrades?

Let’s talk about the USC offensive line.

USC will replace its center, Jonah Monheim, with Syracuse center J’Onre Reed.

The Trojans will replace left guard Emmanuel Pregnon with Purdue guard DJ Wingfield.

Monheim and Pregnon were considered USC’s best offensive linemen.

Does it sound like USC has upgraded? Does it sound like USC has replaced them with just as good linemen? Reed and Wingfield are only returning to college because the NCAA granted junior college players an extra year of eligibility.

It doesn’t sound like the offensive line will be better to me. And this doesn’t even address the right-tackle position, which will also have a new starter.

But Lincoln Riley would probably say I have an “untrained eye” to bring back the phrase he used in 2023 that infuriated the fans.

My untrained eye does feel like he hasn’t deftly used the transfer portal so far.

I thought Gabby said a few days back that he was going to the USC marching band pep rally today at the Palms at 2:00 and wanted to “meet up” with Scott. Instead, he spent the day trolling the blog. Once again a threat followed by a no show. That’s our Cowardly Gabby. All talk, no walk.

  1. Wolf, you ought to at least make an effort to appear like you are trying to report in a balanced and fair way instead of just trying to trash USC with every comment. It would at least give you a semblance of credibility.

    1. So, stay focused on topic, Ken. Do you, as a fan and an observer, think Wingfield and Reed will be at least equal to Pregnon and Monheim, or will there be a dropoff in talent and production? Bettter, same or worse? Which is it? What about replacing the right guard?

If so, why will the offensive line (which was mediocre at best), be equal of better than last year? Please enlighten everyone with your brilliant SC football analysis. If possible.

      What’s the frequency, Kenneth?

  4. What is really upsetting is that so many out-of-town players are expected to play or have leadership responsibilities. Well, if the locals view the coaches as favoring the outsiders or a disconnect disturbs the camaraderie of the program and hinders the performances, then USC will be stuck and not make it past 8 wins next year. There simply isn’t enough Makai Lemon or Travis Dye players on the team to challenge for any championship, let alone a playoff berth. Which means no Ryder Lyons or not enough help for Lyons. Might as well be UCLA.

  5. No surprise , I disagree…I think SC has added the best available to the team, for a team that finished 7-6. They may be stronger up front on both lines. And a running/passing q/b for the ‘O’ line plus good running/blocking backs may improve things quite a lot.
