USC Morning Buzz: Amateurish Display At Galen Center

I didn’t really expect to write much about Monday night’s USC-UCLA game at the Galen Center but something bothered me.

Kobe Johnson, who spent three seasons at USC, was playing for UCLA. Not really a big deal. It happened in football with several USC players like Kyle Ford, Kamari Ramsey and John Humphrey, who were at UCLA the previous season.

I didn’t really notice Johnson, who had seven points and fouled out in 28 minutes. But after fouling out, I saw Johnson on the UCLA bench waving goodbye to the nearby USC student section. After the game, he was holding the “UCLA” on his jersey up to the student section.

Some of these USC students probably cheered Johnson the past three seasons. A friend told me Johnson was also going at it with the students earlier in the game.

Now maybe the students were getting on Johnson. But players get taunted every game and are taught to ignore the crowd.

Here’s the other thing: Was Johnson mad at USC? Andy Enfield and Co. are all gone. All the players from last year except one are gone. So what’s his big beef?

It was just a really amateurish display from Johnson.

  • USC could have beaten UCLA if it didn’t shoot 58 percent on free throws Monday night. UCLA shot 80 percent.
  • The crowd was a disappointment. It looked like about 6,000 but was announced at 7,532. I don’t mind fans not attending when you consider upper level seats were $60.
  • Does USC really to put up a yellow rope around the court after a game where no one is going to go anywhere near the court?

VIDEO OF THE DAY

Time for another SCTV video. This time it’s Rick Moranis as singer Michael McDonald.

  1. Same ol’ same ol” as ucla takes down SC in basketball once again.

I’m sure some of the SC students were getting on Johnson and he retaliated. This seems to be a part of ‘sports’ these days

    1. SC was in the game until the last couple of minutes when they could not hit a free throw. The game could have gone either way. Dissapointing that SC lost, yet, this is Mussleman’s first year and all new players and they don’t understand the signifgance of the rivarly.

      1. Jim Healy would always say, “Bad teams lose close games.” Choking at the free throw line in the friendly confines of the Galen Center is inexcusable.

  2. SC football would have been the dominant power along with Oregon and would get in the playoffs most years  if we still had the Pac 12. The Big Ten enticed SC to leave with all that $$ and  now they are below Ohio State, Penn State and  Oregon . They are at the level of Wisconsin, Michigan,  Washington  and Iowa. It will be really hard for them to overcome all those teams and finish in the top 3 of the Big Ten, especially as they still play Notre Dame. That’s why Lincoln Riley wants to drop that traditional rivalry, he knows if SC loses that game most years that will knock them out of the playoffs if they have 2 losses in the Big Ten.

  3. WTF? The incompetent LA government is forcing fire victims to sit in line for over FIVE HOURS to be given a “pass” to visit their homes! This is insane. Trump called out Mayor Bass for this, and she LIED saying it wasn’t happening. LET THEM IN, DEMOCRAT MAYOR BASS!

  4. “Living in California means driving by miles-long caravans of illegally parked and occupied RVs to go to your boat that you can’t even temporarily live in if your house burned down because, wait for it, you don’t have the proper permit to sleep on your own boat.”

  5. TRUMP: “They say we had the greatest first week in presidential history. Even CNN is saying ‘this guy is amazing.’ I said ‘did CNN really say that?’ But nobody watches so nobody was able to confirm.”

      1. The contrast between the rapid-fire, no-holds-barred Trump approach and the meandering, half-dead corpse of Joe Biden is especially striking. It’s just one of the reasons why Trump’s approval rating has been so strong, including an astonishing 69% approval amongst black voters. Trump 1.0 was fine and good, but Trump 2.0 is simply a superior product. Give Trump credit: He did his homework. He’s 100% prepared — and just as importantly, so is his staff. It’s a liberal like Cowardly Gabby’s worst nightmare.

  6. Our football team will compete in the BIG. Riley made a terrible decision in retaining Grinch but has now corrected his course. We have the best defensive coaching staff in college, hired a new GM, have a competitive NIL program, and a new Southern California recruiting guru. This is a strong foundation. And we are emphasizing defense in recruiting with particular attention to the interior defensive line. Now if we could just get someone to call plays and managed the clock.

  7. I liked Kobe when he was at USC, but he totally acted like a punk. HE chose to leave. He wasn’t run out of USC; why does he feel the need to act like that?
