USC Morning Buzz: A Change For The Better

USC has shuffled its coaching staff and — believe it or not — I think it’s for the better.

Trovon Reed has been hired to replace Taylor Mays and here’s why I like it: Reed will coach cornerbacks, which is the position he played in college and coached at Central Florida last season.

Mays coached safeties. It didn’t really make sense because secondary coach Doug Belk’s specialty was coaching safeties, so there was a redundancy there.

Now it’s more efficient and likely an upgrade for the corners, who will be coached by a former corner.

I get a kick out of the defensive hires because Lincoln Riley obviously has nothing to do with them.

  • I’ve been told by a high school insider not to discount USC’s chances with five-star shooting guard Alijah Arenas and that the two frontrunners are Arizona and Musselman U.
  • Annie Hanson, USC’s Executive Director of Recruiting, said she is stepping back from her role following the birth of her child. That’s expected to be a popular move in the athletic dept.

Our Mayor will work tirelessly to ensure that no such disaster ever happens and in the unlikely event that something like this does happen she will be their to assist with the rebuilding efforts. So will our Governor. We are so good at what we do you won’t need insurance.   6. Basketball is like an after-thought at SC, and may account for average play through the decades except for some great years here and there, but there may be hope with new coach ‘Muscleman’ getting a late start and yet still able to bring in a competititve team

  7. But the best SC-ucla basketball recently was the last game in 2020 before the Pandemic, where at Galen SC is in front at the end but ucla as is their custom, comes back and takes the lead (here we go again), but SC has the last shot and the 3-pointer wins it

  9. SC has not won a basketball National Championship but that Westphal team of 1971 would have had a shot if they had played in the Tournament, and Harold Miner’s team had a chance to go far but were felled by a 3-pointer at the end

  10. What does the “Executive Director of Recruiting” do? She doesn’t evaluate talent or recruit. We have coaches and a newly minted GM at 1 million a year for that job. Has nothing to do with the NIL. I bet she books flights and hotels for the recruits and perhaps coordinates their activities while visiting the campus. Is their an “Associate Director of Recruiting.” Got to love these titles.

      1. Well Trump did eliminate DEI in all Federal programs and all institutions that accept Federal money. That would include USC. He also instructed his DOJ to specifically investigate colleges who have maintain DEI policies in admissions after the Supreme Court ruling in Students For Fair Admissions vs. Harvard College. This would include USC. Can’t wait for Folt to retire. Her woke policies have been a disaster.

  11. Kansas City Chiefs get most of the calls say opponents (presumably not Chiefs’ fans), pointing out the “obvious” 4th down run by Buffalo that came up inches short according to the official ruling, but others say he made it by 3-inches. That is too close of a call to refer to as “obvious”

    KC has also played most of its playoff games at home where arguably the home team gets a slight benefit.
