If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

Pete Carroll made it to class Thursday afternoon and then went to the women’s basketball game, where he got an enthusiastic response from the fans at the Galen Center.

What response would Lincoln Riley get in a similar situation?

Of course, who was at the game with Carroll? The omnipresent USC professor David Belasco, who also accompanied him to Las Vegas for his Raiders press conference and currently seems attached to his hip.

  • Do football coaches do anything these days? I’m tired of reading that every school is hiring staff members who are crucial to every bit of success they have had at their schools.

Do these staff members overrule the coach on who to recruit or sign? Is the coach helpless to evaluate talent without other staff members telling him who is good?

  • And now for some history:
  • This is the kind of story I like to learn about out of the blue. Tom Nickoloff led USC in receiving in 1952 and 1953 and was a captain on the 1953 team.

His father, Jim, owned and operated the Original Barbecue restaurant at 801 S. Vermont Ave. in the Wilshire District. The restaurant claimed to serve 8,000 chickens a month and had “one-minute takeout service.”

“Tom always managed to work his way through the entire menu,” Jim Nickoloff said in 1953.

Tom Nickoloff attended Los Angeles High School, which was only 2.7 miles from the Original Barbecue. Imagine that. A player going to his local neighborhood school instead of some football factory. It really was a different world.

Nickoloff graduated from Los Angeles High a few years before actor Dustin Hoffman, who was Class of 1955.

Here’s a rendering of the restaurant in 1959 when it underwent a $150,000 renovation.

The Original Barbecue opened 1936 and closed in 1984. The site now has a florist, bakery and nail salon.

  • Here’s another photo of Gus Williams in 1973. USC forward Clint Chapman is in the foreground.

  • USC used to be more public in its searches for a new president. In 1979, the finalists to succeed John Hubbard were Thornton Bradshaw, president of Atlantic Richfield Co.; David Gardner, president of the University of Utah and Richard Atkinson, director of the National Science Foundation.

Bradshaw and Gardner withdrew and USC eventually hired James Zumberge, who was president at SMU and had been Chancellor at the University of Nebraska.

Tommy Trojan traded his trademark sword for a slide rule during Engineer’s Week in 1973.

  • Actor-producer John Houseman visited USC in 1979 to promote his book. This was six years after he won an Academy Award for his role in The Paper Chase.
  • This is the USC crew team holding its workout at Echo Park Lake in 1949. This is actually a training barge nicknamed “Gus” that was used before moving to the shells used in races. Did they race the Swan Boats at Echo Park Lake?

      Yesterday Gabby admitted that he had no intention of appearing for a boxing match. “Nobody fights over what is said on a blog.” He was incredulous that anyone should ask for an apology. (Posting fraudulently as steveg) In Gabby’s world, men are not the protectors and providers for their families. You can insult their wives, daughters, and mothers with impunity. He has has no code of honor and therefore believes that nobody else should live by one.     1. I enjoyed Houseman’s portrayal as well. But law school is a joke. You don’t learn the law until you actually practice it. Was never required to prepare a contract in my contracts class. Never even saw one. When I asked my professor why we didn’t prepare actual contracts, he said “we aren’t a trade school for future lawyers.” You should be.

Eliminate DEI, it is illegal but still practiced at USC. Fire all the DEI administrators and get ride of the ridiculous majors such as Women Studies, Black Studies, Chicano Studies, Political Science, ect. This will save tens of millions each year. And give a priority in graduate admissions to Americans. No more “global” university BS with the admission of 5,000 students from Asia.

Thus, trolling is yet another internet activity that promotes narcissistic motives, since trolls may be expected to be far less successful in attracting people’s attention in the physical world. The only effective antidote to their tactics is to ignore them, but even then, trolls won’t suffer a public humiliation because nobody knows who they are. This is what makes trolling so ubiquitous – it requires no skills other than the ability to be obnoxious

    But in other news, Pacific Palisades is now open to the public and a 10-mile stretch of PCH opens Sunday morning at 8. Great news for the ‘Palisaders’ who now get to put up with all the looky-lookers’.

  18. Reviewing the video of questionable football plays eliminated some of the flagrantly wrong calls, but there is no review of “Holding” calls, the biggest killer of drives. And yet it seems like there is holding to some degree on every play somewhere on the opposing lines
