Morning Buzz: Does USC Tradition Matter Anymore?

It’s no secret that Lincoln Riley is no friend of tradition to USC football.

Just look at his feelings toward the Notre Dame rivalry, which is lukewarm at best.

But a former staffer said that Riley was against hosting recruiting dinners with great players from USC’s past.

Most schools try to bring out their biggest former stars to recruiting dinners where high school players rub elbows with the great players from the school’s past.

The source said the recruiting staff respectfully said it was a good thing to have former players show up at recruting functions.

The response? OK, but tell them not talk about the Pete Carroll Era.

That’s a great attitude to have toward one of the greatest periods in USC football history.

  • USC women’s basketball was upset by Iowa on Sunday, 76-69.

But the Trojans earned the respect of the Hawkeyes’ crowd when Coach Lindsay Gottlieb had the team stay on the court after the game and watch the retirement jersey ceremony of superstar Caitlin Clark.

“We had decided prior to the outcome of our game that we were going to stay out there to be part of that,” Gottlieb said.

  2. So I’ll also assume no players from the McKay era are allowed, which was more successful than PC’s. No players from Robo 1, which featured an OL that some pro team’s envied and no players from the PC era because that makes the Boy Blunder look like the joke of a head coach he is.

    And this clown gets 10 million a year, a ” Chief Of Staff “, all the recruiting staff that he wants, a new football facility, a driver, not having to attend alumni functions or campus events, THANKS BOHN !!!

  3. Wiley figures it takes energy on his part to ‘entertain’ Famous SC guys from the past, at least to socialize with them a bit. And that’s not his thing.

    Besides, Wiles is dealing with a state of mind that says “I can’t believe this is happening to me”– the present is too real and the past is already forgotten

      2. Panama entered into an agreement to allow China to operate the Canal zone. This represents a security risk given that some of our Navy ships continue to pass through the Canal. After Trump threatened to take back the Canal, Panama has now agreed not to renew their contract with China which expires in 2027 and will attempt to persuade China to leave the Canal before the expiration date. Another win.

  9. Not sure why Riley doesn’t want to talk about the Pete Carrol Era. I suppose he doesn’t want his team to be compared to those teams. I think that is a mistake. I recall Riley talking about the potential of the USC program when he left Oklahoma and indirectly cited the Carrol Era. “USC is in the middle of Los Angeles, one of the great cities of the world with tremendous opportunities for its graduates; powerful alumni base; great academics; great local athletes t recruit; unmatched football history; beautiful weather; ect. It may take us a few years but we are going to have the Coliseum rocking.”

    Well, maybe he’s right not to mention it given his 7-6 record with loses to Maryland and Minnesota.

  13. CLR’s refusal to embrace the greats of USC’s past is characteristic of a narcissist. People like this are really insecure and they do not want any of the spotlight on anyone else except them. This is why when USC losses, it’s never CLR’s fault. It’s either the players, the officials, or some other outside entity.

      1. Their deal with China wasn’t supposed to end until 2027. If Biden or Harris been in office as that date approaches, the deal would have been extended 20 years or more!

        Peace Through Incompetence & Weakness only resulted in bloodshed. Dims don’t care when the lives lost aren’t their loved ones. They’re incredibly selfish.
