USC Saturday Buzz: Lincoln Riley Vs. Kenny Dillingham

Look at the difference between Lincoln Riley and Kenny Dillingham.

Riley has talked a lot about the importance of NIL and how USC needed to increase its budget to compete.

Dillingham, on the other hand, shows how to survive/thrive without a huge NIL budget.

“Nobody comes here cause they get paid more money. So, if you’re a recruit, I’m sorry. You come here because you see the opportunity and see that kids are not leaving our program. Our best players on our team want to be here, and if that’s not gonna show you that we treat our own players the right way, then the sales pitch is useless because our own players have made the decision to be here.”

Arizona State had a player turn down an offer of several million dollars from Texas in the offseason, by the way.

Would a Riley-coached player do that?

  1. “Nobody comes here because they get paid more money.”

No, they go to Ohio State, Oregon, and Texas. And these programs went a combined 45-5, won a national championship, and finished in the top three of the national polls. The team with the most talented roster generally wins and money attracts talent.

    1. You are correct Plow. But what is also correct is, there are a lot of teams in category of those three schools and just below, that weren’t in the playoffs or anywhere close to the playoffs that spend a hell of a lot of money. When it comes down to it, You still need to develop kids, connect with kids, have a system in place, manage situations, manage clock, create and manage culture. The guy and place who do that best, all things being equal is going to win and retain and often times enough to counter act the money. Now give him the money or at least get it close, then he will always have a better program. It’s just a algebraic equation with many variables. But the most important ones are the ones I stated. It is true that if you load the money variable enough you can tip the scale. But also notice the three programs you mentioned. Lanning, Daily and even Sark are also pretty good at the other aspects too. They create culture, develope, have correct systems in place. You don’t see them bungling clock and game situations. I feel very comfortable in saying (could be wrong) but i can see it. Riley will never win a big 10 or national title , and even close, Franklin won’t either. Lincoln has almost none of the important skill and pieces in place, and James has proven his game a clock skills are atrocious. The SC penn state game was painful to watch from both sides. Never seen a worse coached game on any level from both sides.

Although research in this area is still in its infancy, a few psychological studies have attempted to answer these questions. There are three important lessons learned.

First, trolls are more likely to display noxious personality characteristics, that is, traits that impair one’s ability to build relations and function in a civilized or pro-social way. In a comprehensive examination of their psychological profile, trolls were found to be more Machiavellian (impulsive and charming manipulators), psychopathic (cold, fearless and antisocial), and especially sadist than the overall population. Trolls enjoy harming and intimidating others, so much so that the authors of this study concluded that trolls are “prototypical everyday sadists”, and that trolling should be regarded as online sadism. This is in line with the view of trolling as a form of cyberbullying.

Second, trolling – like other forms of computer-mediated communication – unleashes people’s impulses by providing anonymity and temporary identity loss. This phenomenon, called deindividuation, is well known to psychologists and has been found to emerge in several areas of interpersonal relations, such as gaming, role-playing and crowd behaviors, particularly hooliganism. Thus, even when we are not naturally sadistic, trolling may bring out the worst side in us, by lifting the moral constrains and social etiquette that regulates our behavior in normal situations, and by fueling dissent and triggering abrasive reactions.

Third, trolling is a status-enhancing activity: by attracting readers’ attention, upsetting people, sparking heated debates, and even gaining approval from others, trolls can feel important, perhaps much more than they are in their real lives. Thus, trolling is yet another internet activity that promotes narcissistic motives, since trolls may be expected to be far less successful in attracting people’s attention in the physical world. The only effective antidote to their tactics is to ignore them, but even then, trolls won’t suffer a public humiliation because nobody knows who they are. This is what makes trolling so ubiquitous – it requires no skills other than the ability to be obnoxious

Speaking with podcaster Shawn Ryan, she painted a picture of dysfunction at the highest levels of government: “After the [CNN] debate, Hunter basically commandeered the White House. He sat in on all of the White House top-level meetings. We had a former cocaine addict sitting in on the most sensitive meetings of the most consequential and most important government in world history. Does that sit right with you?”   And you supported this, Cowardly Gabby!
