If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

Several people reached out to me about the John Robinson memorial and who attended.

You know who none of them saw at the memorial? Lincoln Riley.

Robinson and Riley might never have met each other but it’s kind of a good idea for the current USC coach to go to a memorial service for one of the greatest coaches in the history of USC.

I heard the athletic director attended. Maybe she could have told her general manager to tell the football coach to also attend.

  • Jen Cohen is a lot more interesting behind-the-scenes than in the bland interviews she gives on an infrequent basis.

Cohen spoke to the Athletic on Thursday and gave another disappointing answer regarding the Notre Dame series. USC is going to invite disaster with its fans if it discontinues the series. Here is her response:

“It’s such an important series to our fans and both universities. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: In an ideal world, we’re going to keep playing each other. With that being said, the landscape has changed dramatically.

“We’re now playing in a conference where we fly back and forth across the country every other week, and CFP expansion and how you get access to the CFP and how things are seeded and selected.

“Those, to me, are important, unanswered questions. So we remain in conversations with Notre Dame about the series. I think we’re clear to each other (that) we’re going to continue to evaluate what’s best, and it’s my job to evaluate what’s best for our student-athletes and our program. As we keep doing that, we’re excited to go back to South Bend next year.”

Why can’t Cohen just tell Riley he is playing Notre Dame and can leave if he doesn’t like it?

Seven of the teams that made the expanded College Football Playoff had at least two losses. So why is the Notre Dame game considered a make-or-break game?

I’m tired of the mealy mouthed responses regarding the USC-Notre Dame series.

  • And now for some history:

I almost shudder to think what a USC football player would say if asked about the importance of Homecoming and Traveler in the Riley era. But here is what USC star Joey Browner said in 1981.

“Traveler is a unique mascot in itself that goes with the school. When you see the horse run up and down the track it does something to you. Homecoming is set aside for the school and we play for the school. It makes us aware that we are all here together even though we are serving different purposes.”

Then there was the answer given by USC pole vaulter Dave Kenworthy: “Homecoming is one big party offering beautiful women and a good chance to meet the alumni. Everyone gets into the spirit.”

CRAZY THREE WEEKS FOR USC FOOTBALL

  • USC had an eventful stretch of three games in 1951. After a 20-13 victory over Washington, Professor Dick Everest, who was the Huskies’ NCAA representative, released a statement that accused USC of “foul play.”

A crowd of 1,000 greeted USC at Los Angeles International Airport when it returned from Seattle and Coach Jess Hill was carried from the plane by several USC students.

But two days later, Everest said there was little doubt injuries to Washington quarterback Sam Mitchell and halfback Dick Sprague were part of a USC pre-conceived plan to injure the players.

“We are very much surprised that an official representative of a Pacific Coast Conference university could make such a statement,” said USC faculty representative Hugh Willett. “Last Saturday’s game was a hard-hitting game but a clean one. This is amply confirmed by the motion pictures of the game.”

  • The following week, the 14th-ranked Trojans defeated 18th-ranked Oregon State, 16-14. The Beavers claimed afterward that USC’s Frank Gifford crossed the line of scrimmage before throwing a key touchdown pass to Bob Buckley. The Beavers were especially upset after reviewing game films. USC reportedly felt the films were inconclusive.
  • The next week, USC upset No. 1-ranked Cal in Berkeley, 21-14, which snapped the Bears’ 38-game winning streak. USC trailed at halftime, 14-0.

USC linebacker/All-American Pat Cannamela knocked Cal star tailback Johnny Olszewski out of the game with a twisted knee. His USC teammates congratulated Cannamela after Olszewski left the game and Olszewski hinted he was hurt on purpose. Cannamela also had three “roughness penalties” according to Life magazine.

Frank Gifford starred in many USC games in 1951
  • Around 11:30 p.m. that night, about 3,000 USC fans gathered at Union Square in downtown San Francisco where a send-off rally was planned for the Trojan football team.

The police descended on the rally at midnight following reports that people tried to tip over cable cars, jumped on the backs of cars and jostled law enforcement officers.

About 1,000 fans then staged an impromptu parade down Powell Street, stopping at each intersection to perform a So Cal spellout. They burst into a theater on Market Street and led the crowd in songs and yells.

The crowd then invaded a night club on Mason Street and the band performing that evening spontaneously played “Fight On.” The revelers eventually ended up at the Fairmont Hotel where they led cheers in the lobby before calling it a night.

There was no word on whether the football team ever made it to the rally.

UCLA All-American Donn Moomaw died this week at age 93. Here is his name in the opening credits of the 1953 movie, “All American,” which starred Tony Curtis.

The film featured USC All-Americans Frank Gifford, Jim Sears and Elmer Willhoite. It was produced by USC 1933 All-American Aaron Rosenberg and directed by USC 1927 All-American Jesse Hibbs.

USC’s Don ClarkHarry Welch and Al Carmichael are also featured.

PICTURE OF THE DAY

It’s English actress Alexandra Bastedo, who dated David Frost and Omar Sharif but said she turned down the advances of Steve McQueen after he propositioned her with the line, “My wife doesn’t understand me.”

VIDEO OF THE DAY

Since I mentioned “All American,” you can watch it here. It features USC game films and uniforms and an early scene on campus, when Curtis punches Gifford, who falls into the fountain in front of Doheny Library.

  1. ol’ Jen sayings–

“How do you get access to the College Football Playoffs?”– “Just Win!”

Our boys “fly back and forth across the country every other week”– Well, SC sold its soul for about $50-million a year to the “Big-10” so you get what you get

“In an ideal world, we’re going to keep playing each other”– Up until some billionaire offers me $100-million to axe it

  7. I suppose the Notre Dame series will go from every year to every other year to every so often. Jen Cohen’s words were not reassuring. A shame. I already miss the PAC 12. The quarterback play was better than in the BIG 18 and the games and venues were more fun. But we had 70 million reasons to leave and you just can’t walk away from that kind of money so they say.

    1. The QB play is better but the game atmosphere is MUCH better in the Big 10, not even close. Games at Cal & Stanford that used to be sellouts that became half empty stadiums with about half as many USC fans, Cal same thing, ASU is no longer a tough place to play same with UA. Aside from Oregon, Utah and UDUB, not much excitement in the stands

  10. The description of the rowdy celebration reminds me of college. Loud, drunken behavior – tipping over cable cars, walking into movies, singing in hotel lobbies. You only have a few years where you can do this type of thing and stay out of jail. In fact those days are probably over even for college kids. Can’t imagine somebody today trying to tip over a cable car and not ending up in jail.
