If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

When USC canceled its spring game, one of the first things you heard was “Nebraska and Texas also did it.”

But let’s note a difference: Nebraska has sold out 403 straight home games. Texas sold out every game last season and has set an all-time season-ticket record four of the past five seasons.

These teams don’t need to sell tickets. USC has fake sellouts where it says all tickets are sold, then sells tickets on the secondary market. And when you go to the actual game, there are thousands of empty seats.

In short, USC needs events like a spring game to drum up interest in the program. The USC season-ticket renewal deadline is Feb. 28. I bet the people who work in ticket sales were thrilled to hear the spring game was canceled less than 10 days before the deadline.

But hey, don’t worry, there will be a fan engagement event in August.

A USC source told ESPN, “The biggest purpose that a spring game actually serves now is a fan engagement tool, and we just think we can engage fans in a better way,” the source said.

Oh really? Better than a spring game? On a sweltering August day? Will Lincoln Riley be engaging any fans?

  • And now for some history:
  • Did you know USC played Miami in the first college baseball regular-season series televised by ESPN? USC coach Rod Dedeaux is greeted by Miami coach Ron Fraser in the 1981 photo below.
  • Traveler made an appearance at Dodger Stadium in 1977 as USC defeated the Dodgers, 5-2, in their once annual game. You know how many people showed up for the game? 48,000!
  • Sometimes, a random photo can have so many stories behind it. This is from the 1977 Cal-USC dual track meet.
Michael Simmons (left) and Wesley Walker
  • USC sprinter Michael Simmons edged Cal sprinter Wesley Walker in the 100 meters. Simmons and Walker knew each other because they were teammates at Carson High School. In 1975, Simmons ran the second leg on USC’s 4×100 relay team that won the NCAA championship. Walker ran the anchor leg for Cal, which finished second, just behind the Trojans.

Simmons was also a member of USC’s 1977 4×100 relay team that won the NCAA title.

Walker was an All-American wide receiver for the Golden Bears and played for the New York Jets from 1977-89, where he amassed more than 8,300 yards receiving.

  • USC cornerback Ricky Odom returned a fumble for a TD against Stanford in 1977. The Trojans won the game, 48-24.
  • Paul Hackett talks to the USC offense during the Oregon State game in 1977.

THREE EXAMPLES OF A DIFFERENT WORLD

  • Frank Gifford was still a USC student when he landed a role as an extra in the 1952 film, “Bonzo Goes To College.” The movie was the sequel to “Bedtime for Bonzo.”
  • Grammy-winning singer Sarah Vaughn sang at an Open House for USC’s Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity on April 4, 1956. Tickets were 50 cents and the money was donated to a YWCA club.

Vaughn performed at USC following an engagement at the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas.

  • Actress Mitzi Gaynor (South Pacific) attended the 1953 USC-Minnesota game at the Coliseum. According to a press report, “She was wearing a grey flannel dress which she had apparently been poured into.”

PICTURES OF THE DAY

It’s French actress Sonia Petrovna.

And by popular demand, it’s a second week of English actress Alexandra Bastedo.

  1. Last week, new data dropped showing that inflation has hit a seven-month high , driven in no small part by rising food , gas , and housing costs. Egg prices alone jumped 15.2 percent from December. But coffee and other items have also grown more expensive.

As numerous reporting was quick to point out, this is not a great look for President Donald Trump, who campaigned on the promise of lowering costs for consumers on “day one,” and who has also promised lower interest rates, which the Fed is unlikely to deliver unless inflation is under control. Trump reacted to the inflation news by blaming his predecessor. “BIDEN INFLATION UP!” he posted on Truth Social

BIDEN IS LAUGHING HIS A S S OFF AS HE GIVES TRUMP TWO MIDDLE FINGERS.

Trump is a fraud who it proves it day after day

But the games in which they are leading throughout and convinced their victory is assured, celebrating through the entire 4th quarter and thinking about how they’ll continue celebrating that evening, only to have their hearts ripped out in the end? Oh yeah, that is true satisfaction!
