And does this affect the recruitment of five-star QB Ryder Lyons, who is expected to go on a Mormon mission?
It also figures some quarterback will transfer to USC during all this too.
- I ran the picture below yesterday of Paul Hackett from 1977, when he was a USC assistant to John Robinson.
It reminded me that when Robinson’s future was in the balance after the 1997 season, I got a tip that USC was interviewing Hackett in Kansas City to be the next head coach.
So I asked Robinson if he had heard anything about Hackett getting the job?
“If they talked to Paul, he would have told me,” Robinson said. “Paul wouldn’t do that without telling me.”
Well, it turned out Hackett was at that moment talking to USC officials. And he didn’t tell Robinson.
Hackett accepted the job and an unhappy Robinson ended up holding a press conference at a Los Angeles hotel after getting fired. I think the duo met once Hackett arrived in Los Angeles to take over for his former boss.
Last week, Hackett attended the memorial for Robinson in Irvine.

It took Hackett a year to do, but he ended the 8-game losing streak to ucla in 1999 that got John Robinson fired.
There was the 1995 team that won the Rose Bowl, but because of that 8-game losing streak, the 1990s were tough on Trojan fans. And ND laid an even worse streak on SC.

You can’t have three 4/5 star quarterbacks on the roster at the same time. Not only will at least one transfer, this would wipe out your NIL/payola budget. If Williams signs and practices well, Riley lets Lyons go somewhere else. And if Maiava tanks and Longstreet replaces him and plays well, Williams flips back to Oregon or someplace else.
