If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

An interesting story making the rounds in the NFL involves the Raiders and everyone’s favorite coach, Pete Carroll.

The story goes that the Raiders hired Carroll but did not allow him to hire his coordinators. Chip Kelly was hired as offensive coordinator and Patrick Graham was retained as defensive coordinator.

There was speculation Carroll might hire his former coordinators, Darrell Bevell and Gus Bradley, to those roles.

Some believe Kelly is a head coach-in-waiting and Carroll, 73, will coach only two years. I’m predicting there won’t be many dull moments during the Carroll era.

  • Utah’s interim basketball coach is Josh Eilert. Next week, the Utes will play West Virginia. Last year, Eilert finished the season as West Virginia’s interim coach.
  • USC Pro Day will be March 12 at 8:30 a.m. It is closed to the public.
  • Just a heads up as everyone obsesses over 40 times at the NFL Combine. Here are some 40 times:

  • And now for some history:

Oh for the days when a newspaper printed the starting lineup, like for the USC-Cal game in 1982. Look at the offensive line, and for that matter, the defensive front seven.

  • Lynn Cain was an underrated USC running back. He averaged 6.5 yards per carry in the 1979 Rose Bowl (pictured above) and spent six seasons with the Atlanta Falcons (1979-84). He gained 2,309 yards and scored 25 touchdowns in his NFL career.
  • And here is tailback Dwight Ford in 1977.
  • Actress Diane Baker (Silence of the Lambs, Diary of Anne Frank) turned 87 on Tuesday. But she was the USC freshman baseball queen in 1956. The others in the photo (left to right) are freshman coach Dave Rankin along with pitchers Bob Blakeslee, Bill Thorn, Gary McCormick and Dale Ziegler.
  • In 1964, USC and UCLA held pep rallies simultaneously the night before the Crosstown Rivalry. And in a first, the rallies were transmitted to the rival campus via closed-circuit television.

John McKay showe up at the USC rally, unlike Lincoln Riley these days.

  • In 1977, the rally still had a bonfire (unlike today) and the song girls.
  • Never ignore the surroundings. Here are The Three Stooges in football uniforms running through the USC campus.
  • The USC basketball uniforms really stood out back in the day, like in this game against Oregon in 1978 at Mac Court. For the sickos like me, that’s Don Carfino jumping for the tip in the final moments of a tie game with Paul Henderson (left) and George Ratkovich (22). The player obscured by Carfino is the great Cliff Robinson and it looks like the final Trojan is Mark Hoisington.

There’s not much I remember more from Pac-12 (Pac-10) basketball than going to games at Mac Court. The upper decks used to shake when the fans started jumping around. It was the best atmosphere in the conference.

  • The 1980 USC team probably gets shortchanged because it was banned from postseason play. Here’s quarterback Gordon Adams calling a play against Cal. USC won the game, 60-7. And Marcus Allen threw a 22-yard pass to Adams in the game as the Trojans amassed 555 yards in offense.

  13. McCaffrey looks incredibly fast in the games. Many long runs and kickoff returns. Surprised that he is so close to Derrick Henry in the 40. That is why one should not trust combine times where players run in track clothes as opposed to football uniforms. Today’s technology allows for timing a runner based on actual football footage. That is the best measurement.

      Yesterday Gabby admitted that he had no intention of appearing for a boxing match. “Nobody fights over what is said on a blog.” He was incredulous that anyone should ask for an apology. (Posting fraudulently as steveg) In Gabby’s world, men are not the protectors and providers for their families. You can insult their wives, daughters, and mothers with impunity. He has has no code of honor and therefore believes that nobody else should live by one. Although he admits that he will not back up his words with a boxing match, he has now dishonesty posted at least 10 times the exact same response about how he showed up at the gym in Miami.
