USC Morning Buzz: The Angriest/Successful Coaches in College Sports

It’s not every year when the most upset coaches on Selection Sunday are the ones seeded No. 1.

But that was the case Sunday after the NCAA Women’s basketball brackets came out.

USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb was perturbed the Trojans were the last No. 1 seed or fourth overall seed.

“I never thought I’d be a No. 1 seed and feel disrespected, but I thought that the committee — just I thought there would be very little chance we would be the No. 4 overall No. 1,” Gottlieb said.

She likely is mad because USC will have to play UConn in the Elite Eight (not to mention Kentucky in the Sweet 16).

But being No. 4 overall also means USC would play UCLA in the Final Four. That’s a good matchup for USC! It beat the Bruins comfortably the first two times and only lost by five in Game 3 when JuJu Watkins was off and the rest of the did next to nothing.

  • If this wasn’t enough, South Carolina coach Dawn Staley went on her own rant because she wanted to be the No. 1 seed of the entire tournament (UCLA got that honor).

“I will say this: We’re gonna make adjustments to our schedule in the future if the standard is the standard. If that’s the standard then we can play any schedule and get a No. 1 seed.

“I’m a little bit surprised because we manufactured our schedule to be the No. 1 overall seed. … It’s hard enough to win a national championship, we don’t need a chip on our shoulder.”

That part about dumbing down the schedule. Does that mean South Carolina might back out of playing USC on Nov. 15 at Crypto Arena? Is the “Battle for the real SC” in jeopardy? Or is Staley just trying to motivate her players? Does Gottlieb think it’s better for USC players to feel disrespected?

  • Meanwhile, are the USC men going to be included in the College Basketball Crown Tournament, which announces its field today. All the games are in Las Vegas and the players get paid, so it sounds ideal for USC.
  • Former ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski was at Mt. San Antonio College on Sunday to watch City College of San Francisco face Mt. SAC in the California junior college championship game.

Wojnarowski was scouting the game in his new job as St. Bonaventure general manager.

  1. In the old days when March Madness came along and SC didn’t make the tournament we could concentrate on spring football practice. Now under Sir Lincoln of Riley all is top secret.

  3. SC (South Caolina’s version) wants to ‘dumb down their schedule so they can get higher seedings in the future. Isn’t that Wiley wanted to do– dumb down the schedule i.e. dump ND to get into the Tournament

      3. The 1969 Wild Bunch beat Mich 10-3 in Rose Bowl, finishing with an undefeated record. Trojans should have been national champs that year instead of TX, which had one loss. TX had no passing game and ran the wishbone offense. The Wild Bunch held opposing teams to something like 2 yards per carry. No realistic way that TX had the team speed or strength to deal with Charlie Weaver, Jimmy Gunn, Al Cowlings, Tody Smith, Bubba Scott, Tony Terry if they had played against each other.

  8. I don’t think the difference between the number one seed and the number four is that big of a deal. You still get to the elite eight before you play a number five seed that has the talent to beat you. And if you truly are the number one, a number five seed should not be a problem if you play well. The other top seeds are also playing good teams when you get to the elite eight game.

    1. Arizona’s men’s team beat three #1 seeds and won the NCAA in 1997 after finishing 5th in the Pac 12. The SC coaches need to stop obsessing about ducking competition and beat whoever is on the schedule.

  10. Not only is USC spring practice secret, they didn’t even report the start date of practice to the Big 10. I believe every other Big 10 team identified their spring practice starting date.

  12. How many coaches are there on the women basketball team. I count at least four with two of them talking at the same time. Maybe one of them is a trainer but you would think two coaches would be sufficient.

  13. Ditka was an angry coach. He benched McMahon for off field stuff. The bears fell behind on MNF to the Vikings and Ditka put McMahon in with instructions to run the ball. McMahon audibled and hit Gault on a deep fly for the win. Ditka was irate. Years later McMahon and Ditka were recalling the play and McMahon told Ditka that he called plays like a tight end.
