USC Morning Buzz: A Minor Crisis Averted

USC finally released its spring roster and a minor disaster was averted when no one was granted No. 55 (for now).

Remember, a player had formally asked to wear the hallowed number and he hadn’t done much to merit it.

The roster is here. Two highly touted freshmen — QB Husan Longstreet and DE Jahkeem Stewart — will wear No. 4.

Six defensive linemen will wear single digit numbers. Cornerback Maliki Crawford is not listed on USC’s spring roster.

Spring practice starts Tuesday. There will not be a spring game.

  1. Scooter,

Can you think of any other coach that did not allow fans to show up nor have a spring practice game? What is Riley afraid of? He is afraid of showing off his incomptency with game management for one thing.

      1. karma — Riley’s game management in the spring game has slowly gone downhill….last year he had serious clock management issues [evidenced by only playing one half of football]…..

      1. Reading a book on the Wonderland murders by Det’s Lange & Souza. Mr. Nash had a lot of influence at the LAPD, must have been all the free food, broads, drinks and drugs and probably the odd cash handout the cops “enjoyed” at his clubs.

      2. Buddha: So who do they say is responsible for the murders. As I recall, there were multiple acquittals with no convictions.

“Drugs and cash handouts.” Sounds like Congress.

  2. –Ever been to a football game in season when there were few fans? It’s the presence and roar of a crowd that infuses a game with its energy

    1. I went to a UCLA game at the Rose Bowl when Rosen was the quarterback. Pasadena school district gave away free endzone tickets to the elementary students and my kid wanted to go. Maybe 20,000 fans. Nobody wanted to be there. We sat at the 40 yard line and nobody asked us for our ticket. It was pathetic. Left at half time.

      1. In one post you claim you have no kids in school…..another they are in HS and another in elementary. I guess it’s hard for you to remember lies

      2. Kathy: Rosen played between 2015 to 2017. At that time, my kid was in elementary school. It been roughly 9 years and now he is in high school. Funny how kids don’t stay in the same grade for 9 years like they did when you went to “that special school for the slow learners.”

I thought Gabby said a few days back that he was going to the USC marching band pep rally today at the Palms at 2:00 and wanted to “meet up” with Scott. Instead, he spent the day trolling the blog. Once again a threat followed by a no show. That’s our Cowardly Gabby. All talk, no walk.

  3. That is something that in Tokyo Stadium the fans in certain sections are given a glove and helmet for protection. You’d never see that at Dodgers Stadium where its lawyers stand on the premise of “assuming the risk”

  4. I don’t like the single digit numbers on defensive linemen. Prefer the numbers in the nineties: 92,93,96,99, ect. It makes the players look even bigger. Single digits are for little guys – receivers, running backs and quarterbacks and maybe a cornerback.

  5. Check out Longstreet’s video. He is 18, and while arm strength is not everything, he threw a 78 yard pass a couple of months ago. Mahomes, Allen, Herbert might be able to do that. But perhaps no other NFL QBs. Fingers crossed we keep that young man.

    1. 67: I watched part of the Polynesian bowl and Longstreet was very impressive. He can move and throw accurately on the run. He was finding open receivers and throwing between defenders. I think that he will legitimately compete for the starting job next year. We may have landed the gem of the 2025 class.

      1. Furthest I could ever throw was 40-45 yards, John [and I’m fudging by putting the “45” in there — more like 40-41 yards]. I could still throw 33 yards up till last year [measured by street lamps 100 feet apart]—- but…. trying to show off for some other old timers in a throwing contest I screwed up my shoulder to the point I can’t throw 20 yards as of now.
