If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

USC spring football will go from March 25-April 26 with practices on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. All practices are closed to the public.

There will be no spring football game for the public to attend.

  • The transfer portal for basketball opens March 25 but Eric Musselman’s Trojans don’t even start playing in the College Basketball Crown Tournament until April 1.
  • Freshman football players will not be allowed to speak to the media during USC spring practice.
  • Bronny James had a career-high 17 points last night for the Lakers and was 7-10 from the field.
  • And now for some history:

Here’s a picture of the 1979 USC-UCLA game at the Coliseum. UCLA tight end Tim Wrightman is covered by USC linebacker Larry McGrew.

Sometimes, good things come from unexpected places. Last night, I posted a 1967 team photo. A reader has sent in a color photo (above) but more importantly, look at the back of the photo. It contains the scores from every game and the names of everyone in the photo.

This is an ad for the John McKay show but I’m running the picture for what it says at the bottom. If kids join the Jr. Trojan Huddle Club, they can “Meet Coach McKay Personally!”

Here’s a photo from the 1978 USC-UCLA game at Pauley Pavilion. No. 44 is former USC great Cliff Robinson. No. 30 is USC forward Darryl Smith. No. 31 for UCLA is Gig Sims.

USC played at Illinois in 1973. The Trojans flew to Chicago then took a small plane to Champaign-Urbana. One player said the landing in the small plane was the scariest moment of his life. That’s USC forward John Lambert (left) and guard Biff Burrell in the photo.

    Why does the media even cover Spring practice. They can’t watch the practices, can’t interview the new players, and there is no Spring game. This is going to turn off the fans and donors. Jen Cohen needs to tell Riley that fans matter and he needs to open things up.

      8. Gabby — George was a better athlete than people gave him credit for [so was Joe, btw]. But George’s two main ‘gifts’ were (1) his Big Right Hand and (2) his knowledge of how to use it. When he returned to fighting after losing to Jimmy Young all he did was keep a guy at the end of his jab until he saw the opportunity to drop the Big Right on his chin. It wasn’t exactly pretty…but…it was economical…and it almost always worked.

      1. Mocking Chuck [Cal 75] while he was in cancer treatment was an almost unforgiveable act. Chuck lived alone …the treatment robbed him of the use of his arms — to stand up after leaving a chair he had to gently roll to the ground and use a wall to climb to his feet. He really struggled at the end. No decent person would mock him.

        Note to John: I called Chuck. His phone has been disconnected.
