Saturday Buzz: Stanford Declines USC

Here is a sign of how much the fortunes of USC and Stanford women’s basketball have changed.

USC contacted Stanford and asked to play a non-conference game next season. Stanford declined.

Stanford wanting no part of USC is something no one would have imagined a few years ago. But hard times have hit Palo Alto. The Cardinal were 16-15 this season and lost to Portland in the first round of the women’s NIT. Just four years ago, Stanford was national champions.

USC, on the other hand, hosts North Carolina-Greensboro today at the Galen Center and is a No. 1 in the NCAA Tournament.

Stanford has several problems and it’s not just the departure of coach Tara Vanderveer. The Cardinal areSC

  1. Athletics is no longer a priority at Stanford. Students, faculty, and alumni should care less about the teams. The BIG was correct in not extending an invitation to join the conference to Stanford and Cal.

    1. The farm’s average football attendance is reported at 33,000, and who knows how many actually show up.

If you’ve been to Stanford recently, you will see that the vibe is not at all like that of a college campus. More like a Silicon Valley farm team/trainer of foreign electrical engineering students. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It is what it is. But there is little campus energy at Stanford now.

      2. 67: I think there is something wrong with being a Silicon Valley farm team for foreign students. U.S. colleges should be training U.S. students. It makes our country stronger, not China. And it is a shame that 18 to 22 year old students can’t have some raucous fun during their college years. God knows they are not going to have fun working as software engineers for one of these Silicon Valley firms – impossible demands, deadlines, 50 to 60 hour work weeks and no social life.

      3. Michael, who can forget (I wish I could) Wanda Austin’s infamous “I like Clay Helton. He doesn’t drink, smoke, do drugs, or run around town.”

Plow Horse. 100% agree. Every major university seems to be determined to be a “global university” today. We should focus on American kids, and develops campuses where they can have some fun and not worry.

      4. Yesterday I watched a documentary on an Italian Opera Society — since all their members are in their late seventies and early eighties, they pause in silence at the beginning of each of their annual meetings to honor “lost friends.” When I read the hate-filled post that Kathy put up upon learning Cal 75 passed, I realized how profoundly out of touch he/she has become…..

      6. This is how evil Cowardly Gabby is: Gabby

Cal was a racist limp—dic troll. Who was constantly talking s h i t about about minorities and making things up to fuel his agenda.

I had zero respect for the sack of dung. The world is a better place without his racism.

        JUST MY OPINION!

      8. MG: “how profoundly out of touch he/she has become”

HAS BECOME?! LOL! I’ve been telling you guys that for 4 or 5 years. You sounded here like all of the people who were surprised the night of June 27. They finally caught on to what the rest of us had known since 2019/20.

      9. P.S. Now that you have confirmed it, once Lent is over I will raise a glass to Cal 75! Sensible Berkeley people are hard to come by!!

      10. No worries. Most Catholics don’t know it.

Another thing many do is make the sign of the cross after receiving communion. The Church has never taught that nor required it.

      11. MG, since you enjoyed the Italian Opera Society documentary, you’d probably enjoy the Oscar winning “The Only Girl in the Orchestra” on Netflix. If you haven’t seen it already.

  2. Any USC-Stanford drama – in any sport – needs to be accompanied by the famous DT cartoon where USC needs a 2 pt. conversion to go up 2,000 on The Farm.

“I have been in the other position a lot more than that horse’s ass,” McKay said of Ralston. “I don’t like any part of him. His day is coming.”

Ralston denied running up the score: “I guess John has forgotten about some of those games when his USC teams pounded on my Stanford bunch and on other Pacific Coast Conference opponents. I can’t ever remember him taking out O.J. (Simpson) when he had us on the run.”

Yesterday Gabby admitted that he had no intention of appearing for a boxing match. “Nobody fights over what is said on a blog.” He was incredulous that anyone should ask for an apology. (Posting fraudulently as steveg) In Gabby’s world, men are not the protectors and providers for their families. You can insult their wives, daughters, and mothers with impunity. He has has no code of honor and therefore believes that nobody else should live by one. Although he admits that he will not back up his words with a boxing match, he has now dishonesty posted at least 10 times the exact same response about how he showed up at the gym in Miami. Is this suppose to be amusing? Please stop ruining our blog with repetitive copy and paste posts.

  4. So Cal and Michael,

Lent is technically over when Christ dies on the Cross. However, it is tradition to not celebrate until Easter due to Christ rising.

    Dear Jesus,

Please take care of Cal 75 and let him be in heaven with you. He was a good one. Thank you Jesus.
