If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

USC coach Lincoln Riley gave his reasons for not doing a spring game on Thursday.

“The biggest thing for us is the spring game is for the fans and the spring game is a chance to get guys out in in front of a stadium,” Riley said.

“The negative to the spring game is it now is being broadcast all over the place so nobody wants to do anything schematically that they’re going to do (during the season).

“So you end up spending a day or two days just to get ready for the spring game and then a spring game you’ll be limited in what all you can do.”

Talk about a tone-deaf response. He admits it is for the fans and then basically says who cares? What does he do so special schematically in these scrimmages that it is going to ruin his game plan if other teams watch it?

Why not do a closed scrimmage where you do all the top-secret stuff and then a spring game with a vanilla offense?

The answer is Riley doesn’t want to do anything that will cause the slightest inconvenience to himself. And the fans don’t matter to him, even if he pays lip service when he adds, “We’re still going to do some things that create an experience for our fans, because obviously creating that interaction is important.”

An experience? Is he a robot? And using the word “interaction” is interesting since he has avoided those with fans for the past three years.

Yes, USC will do something in August, when it will be around 100 degrees. Sounds enticing.

  • By the way, when it originally canceled the spring game, USC promised something for the former players. As of now, nothing has been announced.
  • And now for some history:
  • USC fullback Ben Wilson was a punishing 250-pound back in the early 1960’s and was bigger than a lot of offensive linemen.

He was awarded the game ball in back-to-back victories over UCLA and Notre Dame (pictured) in 1962. He rushed for two TD’s against the Irish and received a standing ovation from the fans.

Notre Dame’s Frank Budka fractured his leg trying to tackle Wilson in the game. Wilson gave his Notre Dame game ball to teammate Marv Marinovich because he said he didn’t want to be selfish and keep two.

It’s worth appreciating the fact USC and Notre Dame are both wearing their home jerseys while the Irish are also wearing shamrock helmets in this 1962 contest.

Wilson scored a TD in the 1963 Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin and the Trojans finished undefeated and national champions. He was drafted by the Rams and was their second-leading rusher in 1963.

He became the first African-American student accepted to the University of Tennessee dental school but decided to return to USC and get his master’s degree.

Wilson was traded to Green Bay in 1967 and started Super Bowl II, where he rushed for 62 yards in 17 carries as the Packers defeated the Oakland Raiders, 33-14.

  • One time, Lane Kiffin joked that I never spent any time in the library as a student at USC. My response: “At least I didn’t major in leisure management at Fresno State.”

USC linebacker Richard Wood, the first 3-time All-American in school history, tackles UCLA All-American tailback Kermit Johnson in the 1973 game at the Coliseum.

  • Back in 1974, you would get the tape delayed broadcasts of USC (and UCLA) games on Channel 5. But as this ad shows, it was a special weekend because at halftime of the games with Washington and Washington State, you had Tom Kelly calling the 2-on-2 championships for USC students.

You can’t even get something like that televised today even with all the bogus networks that exist showing college basketball games.

On a personal note, that USC-Washington State game was the first time I went to a Trojan basketball game and my dad thought I was crazy for wanting to go to this game instead of a UCLA game.

  • This was a coup at the time for USC and it’s aged like a fine wine. A special screening of the film “Badlands” that starred Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek at Bovard Auditorium.

The coup was getting director Terrence Malick to attend the screening and answer questions. Malick went on to become an almost mythic figure in cinema after directing the 1978 film “Days of Heaven.” Both Badlands and Days of Heaven are considered classics and Malick became famous for declining to do interviews.

But he came to USC and talked about a film. For a $2 ticket. He went to be nominated for three Academy Awards.

  2. Thanks, Scott, that 1973 game brought back a memory of how after the game was over and won by the Trojans, I was in bumper-to-bumper traffic getting out of the coliseum, and lo and behold, a busload of Bruins was right next to me, and they then started throwing beer cups at my car. Doused it pretty well.

And all because I had painted on my car, “MUZZLE BRUINS”

Drove him to the brink of a mental breakdown. He lost 40 pounds and when he tried to leave her she showed up at the train station with a pistol and took a shot at him. She was pregnant when she committed suicide because she did not want to have an abortion. Some say the baby was Cooper’s but given the number of active lovers nobody really knows.

  7. Hasn’t Riley been running his version of the Air Raid for about 10 years, first at Oklahoma and then USC. Presumably everyone at this point who watched Riley teams through the years has a fairly good understanding of his offensive scheme. What is he going to give away in the Spring game that has not already been seen. And if he somehow made some changes to the offense, are they not going to be shown in the first three fluff games of the year and the big boys like ND, Michigan, and Oregon will have plenty of time to review the film. The schematic excuse doesn’t fly.

Peter Gibbons: It’s a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my ass off and [USC wins a few more games], I don’t see another dime; so where’s the motivation? And here’s something else, Bob: I have eight different bosses right now.
Bob Slydell: I beg your pardon?
    Peter Gibbons: Eight bosses.
    Bob Slydell: Eight?
Peter Gibbons: Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That’s my only real motivation is not to be hassled; that, and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired. ”

One side wants to enforce immigration laws, lock up criminals and deport criminal aliens, eliminate DEI and return to a merit based system, end the wars and hundreds of billions of dollars in spending on them, return manufacturing to the U.S., make NATO pay their fair share of defense spending, end the mandate on electric vehicles and other stupid and ineffective green policies, make the U.S. energy independent, eliminate the Iranian nuclear threat and Middle East terrorism, identify and eliminate a trillion dollars in government fraud and waste, end violent protests and antisemitism on college campuses, kick sexual perverts out of the military, restrict women sports to women, ect. The other side, the Democrats, are opposed to these actions and are asking the corrupt Federal District courts with leftist judges appointed by Democrats to enjoin them.

      1. A clever attempt but no cigar Sparrow. The emphasis on Twain’s comment was on “dumb” not “divided.” Otherwise the comment has no comedic value.

DON: Sir Lincoln of Riley is running the same tired old offense he ran for years at Oklahoma. Imagine if someone sees “the scheme” at the Spring Game? Oh da horrah!

    1. John — It is difficult to imagine a person as astute as you defending today’s Democrat Party. Leading Dems are saying “we’re in a death spiral —we have no ideas beyond holding public unhappiness sessions.”

  19. Good news. I hear Elise Stefanik is going to urge the House to call Federal District Court “Judges” with families profiteering off their cases [by taking 10 -15% of the profits off the top of their dem fundraising] before congress to explain how they’re not violating their oaths of office by not recusing themselves.

      1. There are about half dozen federal “judicial officers” whose families are fundraising off their cases. Goofball Chief Justice Roberts needs to take action [as he’s constitutionally empowered to do — as ‘overseer of the lower federal courts’]……

    1. The NY state judges were just as bad. Juan Merchan’s daughter was a democratic fundraiser who raised millions to defeat Trump and yet he saw no conflict of interest in presiding over the “your bookkeeper should have stated NDA, not legal expense on the corporate form and since she did it 34 times its 34 felonies” case.

      1. Speaker Mike [no johnson] Johnson needs to drag “jurists” with families making money off their cases into hearings held by the House. Even if no legislation results [which, let’s face it, is a 100% certainty], it’ll be fun for voters to see what sleazebags these “judicial officers” are.

[For anybody worried about “Separation of Powers” let me assure you that the point of the hearings would not involve the merits of the cases —- just the illegal profiteering]……
