USC Sunday Buzz: A Lot Of Attention On Stars

Malik Brooks, the three-star defensive tackle from Pius X who committed to USC, also held offers from Alabama, Notre Dame and Georgia.

So with all the attention why is he a three-star?

Do colleges see him as a player they can potentially develop? He was the co-MVP defensive player of the Angelus League, so high school coaches saw him as an impact player.

With USC poised for a big 2026 recruiting class, it would still be nice to see some five-star, can’t miss linemen. We still have not seen that on the offensive or defensive line in this much-hyped class.

  • USC will play in the College Basketball Crown this week. The tournament features a team (Villanova) where the coach got fired and teams (Arizona State, Utah) with players in the transfer portal.

  1. It would indeed be great to get some “can’t miss 5 star linesmen”…if only one knew how to do that. USC has had several 5 star recruits who performed far below expectations, including several during the Carrol era.

    1. And who can ever forget DL Korey Foreman from Centennial High School, who was rated a 5-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 5-star grade by 247 Sports. After high school, Foreman joined USC after being heavily recruited.

  4. Keith Van Horne wasn’t a 5 star, but he was pretty good and had a long NFL career

    5 star OL are rare, if SC can land 2 or 3 more 4 stars, and they lead for 3 of them, let’s see how they develop over their career

    1. I think you have to go back to the Carrol era for a 5 star OL. Maybe Matt Kalil and Tyron Smith. But we have a high four star already with Esun Tafa and a legitimate chance to land Keenyi Pepe, Sam Utu, Kodi Greene and Malakai Lee. And we landed Winfield and Tom Tom on the interior DL. One of these guys if not more will likely be a 5 star at the end of their senior year. It should be a great class.

  9. KAM: Speaking of ‘stars,’ maybe a guy is a 3-star in high school, but after completing his physical growth in college he can become at least a 4-star.

    DON: Besides, evaluating high school football talent is often more art than science. Even 5-stars don’t always work out, but most of them do
