USC Thursday Buzz: Transfer Portal Time

Tailback A’Marion Peterson is expected to enter the transfer portal according to 247.

It’s unusual, though not unprecedented, to enter the portal during spring practice.

Is Peterson not happy with his reps during spring practice? USC added New Mexico-transfer Eli Sanders and JC-transfer Waymond Jordan in the offseason.

USC already lost Quinten Joyner after the season so both backs who entered two years ago could transfer.

  • Freshman women’s basketball player Avery Howell announced she would enter the transfer portal. This is a surprise.

Howell averaged 7.5 points per game but scored 18 against Kansas State last week and was seen as a vital player for next season.

Why would she leave? Well, she is a 5-star prospect and it’s probably not easy coming to a team where JuJu Watkins averages 20 shots per game.

It’s going to be interesting to see where Howell ends up transferring.

  • John Vella, a USC All-American offensive lineman, has died. He was 74.

Vella started out as a defensive lineman at USC, got switched to offense and became an All-American in 1971. He then played with the Oakland Raiders from 1972-79, winning one Super Bowl.

Vella went to Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks. The QB on his team was Tim Foli, who became a pro baseball player.

After he retired, Vella opened a store called “John Vella’s Raider Locker Room” in Castro Valley that sold Raiders gear and memorabilia.

  1. NIL is a consideration, but college athletes also want to go to a school that gives them the best chance to make the pros

    1. KAM: What I find so frustrating about the conversation around tariffs is that we all agree on the problem. We all agree that the de-industrialization of America led to the downward mobility of the American working class, deaths of despair, people working multiple jobs and not being able to afford the American dream. We all agree that it is deeply unfair for the American middle class to be bearing the burden of unfair tariffs from other countries. We all agree that it is great for the President to have leverage in order to demand reasonable things, like that country stop allowing fentanyl to murder 100,000 Americans every year, and that Mexico do its part to police its own border. And yet, when somebody has the courage to show up and say to Wall Street, “Screw you. I am waging war. I’m waging class warfare on behalf of the American working class, and you elites on Wall Street, you do what you need to do, because I’m not going to stop fighting for the American working class.” Suddenly, everybody is sitting around going, “Oh no, the stock market!” Yeah, the stock market looks like that because the rich are punishing Trump for siding with the neglected and humiliated American working class over them.

DON: My pro-worker, anti-war, socially moderate America First agenda was the Democrats’ platform for a century. Now it’s MAGA. I’m deeply humbled by everyone who reached out to share that this resonated with them.

  2. Very disappointed to hear about Howell. She, K9 and Kennedy Smith really made the future look bright, especially if JuJu doesn’t exhaust her eligibility.

    1. Juju is unlikely to play next season. Typically takes men a year to recover from an ACL tear and women can’t rehab as aggressively as men. That being the case, it makes Howell’s transfer more perplexing. She would likely be featured prominently in the offense and get her share of shots that would have gone to Juju

    2. With Juju out until January (if we’re lucky), it is bizarre that Howell would leave. Could it be the new batch of 5 stars coming in next fall or a higher NIL offer elsewhere …?

  3. Petersen was a good back. Played well in the Las Vegas Bowl. Don’t blame him for leaving. He was recruited with promises that he would get a chance to play and when it was his turn Riley pulled two guys out of the portal. You don’t need 6 running backs. I wonder what will happen if Riley pulls David Bailey out of the portal. Will we lose some of the young and promising edge rushers who have already been in the system for a few years?

      1. Peterson was in the program for 2 years. He played a full game against Texas A&M and played well. That experience is meaningful. And Jackson also played well against A&M. He has meaningful experience too. I thought Riley said that he was going to build the team culture through high school recruiting and only use the portal when absolutely necessary – a lack of depth or talent. They had depth and talent at running back.
