USC coach Lincoln Riley fired his long-time strength coach Bennie Wylie today.
For several years, I have questioned the effectiveness of the strength program and no one else seemed to raise concerns.
Remember last year, when the media bought into the propaganda that the football team had gained 1,400 pounds of muscle prior to the season?
Did USC look stronger last season? Think back to the Minnesota game on that one for just one example.
- Here’s my question: Did Riley “decide” to fire Wylie or did Coach Bowden?
If you fire a strength coach, you do it in December because the winter months are where a strength coach earns their money and sees/deals with the players more than the coaches.
But Coach Bowden wasn’t hired until late January and needed some time to evaluate the program.
And when has Riley made a tough decision unless he was forced to do it, like the firing of Alex Grinch.

All of this is Bowden, this firing, the recruiting, he goes on all forms of media, it’s actually embarrassing that the GM is doing this and not the head coach.

Why was Bennie Wylie fired? Riley wanted bigger/stronger players after Grinch and Harrell emphasized speed and flexibility. He did that. The players seemed to really appreciate Wylie. My guess is that the new emphasis will be on more functional strength and speed training as opposed to traditional weight lifting and Wylie opposed it but that is just a guess.

These posts are great because it shows the Blogger talking about how he was the only one – program insider, locals, national media – who noticed a problem in the football program that ends up getting fixed.
