USC Morning Buzz: Football Focus Is On Everything But Championships

You know what the main talking point was with USC in the 1970’s? Winning.

When Pete Carroll was riding high, there were entertaining things going on around the program but the main talking point? Winning.

And now? People brag about the No. 1-ranked recruiting class. We talk about the general manager, who talks about toilet paper. A new strength coach or assistant coaches. A new football facility. NIL. Last year, it was the 1,400 pounds of muscle the team added.

When do we get to talk about winning?

  • Happy 81st birthday to George Lucas, who always looked stylish in a USC letterman’s jacket while he directed American Graffiti.

    1. Yes, win and then we can talk about winning. But until then, we need to talk about how the program improves – better coaches, better recruiting, better facilities, better support staff, ect.

    2. KAM: Axios saw Biden’s mental decline on full display at the debate and reported he had a cold. All because one White House source “confirmed” it. Meanwhile, Tapper adamently insisted Biden’s decline was actually just sudden onset stutter.

    DON: Jake Tapper on Senile Joe Biden’s cognitive decline: “The White House was LYING not only to the press, not only to the public, but they were lying to their own cabinet. They were lying to White House staffers, they were lying to Democrats in Congress about how bad things had gotten.”

    1. The mental decline was observable. Biden couldn’t read from a teleprompter, answer questions, walk off a stage or into an airplane. Nobody had to rely on the White House to tell them anything. Reminds me of the sayings – “Are you going to believe me or your lying eyes.” All of the members of the press who failed to report on the declining mental condition including Tapper and Todd were complicit in the cover-up and should never work in the industry again.

  5. Two things to work on before getting to more WINS

    Maiva had difficulty throwing mid field and seemed to have perception problem. Opposition knew this and positioned themselves for interceptions and it worked!

    The opposition knew what plays Riley was going to call especially around the goal line.

Prices climbed at an unexpectedly slow pace last month, offering a boost to President Donald Trump, whose aggressive trade policies have sparked fears of a resurgence in inflation. The Labor Department on Tuesday reported that prices rose at an annual rate of 2.3 percent, the smallest increase since early 2021. While price growth in so-called core sectors of the economy — which exclude volatile food and energy costs — remained elevated at 2.8 percent, April’s Consumer Price Index contained only scant evidence that Trump’s tariffs have meaningfully driven up the cost of living. Kudos to Politico for framing the story this way.

Amazon MGM Studios has started production on its “Madden” film — and a shocking first-look photo of the film’s lead stars was released on Tuesday. In the image, Nicolas Cage looks unrecognizable with shaggy hair as Oakland Raiders coach-turned-legendary NFL broadcaster John Madden.

    DON: The same goes for Christian Bale as Raiders owner Al Davis.
