Sunday Buzz: Mixed Results For USC At Big Ten Track

Two weeks ago I was critical of USC track and field for taking a conservative approach and getting swept by UCLA at the dual meet. Remember, the USC men and women were ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the nation.

USC got a bit of redemption Sunday (sort of).

The women defeated Oregon, 121-113, to win the Big Ten Conference track championship. The men, on the other hand, finished fourth with 78 points. Oregon won the title with 110 points.

Kudos to the women, who scored 100 points in the sprint events and relays.

But this still does not excuse that dreadful performance in the dual meet. A lot of diehard track fans, and more casual fans like me, care more about the dual meet than the conference meet.

UCLA’s men finished 11th at the Big Ten meet and beat USC. UCLA’s women finished third and beat USC.

Now the NCAA championships next month will be interesting because they will test whether USC can win a title with basically a sprinter-only team.

  1. USC refuses to field a top woman’s cross country team and why they don’t try to recruit ONE top distance runner ( Kenya anyone ? ) is beyond me. The points that could be had by one distance runner could be the difference in winning, but it’ll never happen.

    I’m going to give Scott extra credit here because 90% of the general population would have written (or said) “like myself”. Most people are afraid to get the “I” versus “me” wrong and opt for the booby prize of “myself” as some sort of catch-all, even though it’s incorrect. We see many people here write “people like yourself” even though it’s wrong.

    1. Subject vs. Object: “I” is a subjective pronoun, meaning it’s used when you are the person performing the action. “Me” is an objective pronoun, meaning it’s used when you are the person receiving the action. 

      For example, if Haden writes ” I was fisting Cowardly Gabby” that is correct. And if Cowardly Gabby writes “Haden was fisting me” that is also correct. But if Cowardly Gabby writes “me was fisting Haden” or “Haden was fisting I” that would be wrong, very wrong.

      1. Exactly! Meaning that unless you’ve already used “I” or “me” in the sentence, “myself” probably doesn’t belong. But millions use it anyway.

  4. The censors wisely disallowed me commenting on the possible legal basis for the surprise announcement on Joe Biden’s condition [not picked up in last week’s physical ….or the one given last month….or the one the month before that]…..

    [I should mention, however, that Joe’s lawyers have asked that he be kept away from all media outlets ….except ABC…. for the rest of his life….. as well as courtrooms, hearings and depositions focusing on treason….out of respect for his health]……

Re your last sentence, Gabby: …and so did the federal court system ….which threw out every single challenge to certification on “standing” or “ripeness” grounds….. the only evidentiary hearing that took place occurred in a Arizona STATE court [where the judge found “no chain of custody could be proved on millions of mail-in ballots”]…..

The cancer angle is CURRENTLY being played up for a legal reason, Gabby — Biden needs to avoid being called to testify in congressional hearings on his refusal to destroy the billions of dollars of weapons turned over to our enemies in the Afghanistan withdrawal. The cancer he has is NOT gonna kill him, it hasn’t suddenly progressed to Stage 187— it’s just an excuse to be offered by his lawyers every time he gets a subpoena. IF republicans asked for him to provide a blood sample to be analyzed by independent experts, Biden would refuse. [It would be like that scene in The Thing when Kurt Russell lines up his entire team and asks, at gunpoint, for a blood sample to figure out which one is an alien …and one guy starts yammering about his privacy rights —-and Russell gets to say “how did I know YOU were gonna say that?”]…
