If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

You know, someone like Reggie Bush would be a good person to try to save the USC-Notre Dame rivalry by lobbying the higher-ups in the athletic dept. Unfortunately, Bush is suing USC. Never mind.

  • Did you notice when Sports Illustrated wanted a quote from USC on Monday, Jen Cohen had an underling deliver it? She doesn’t want to become the face of this issue and deal with the public backlash.

By the way, Cohen hasn’t bothered to do anything about the fact USC hasn’t had a Hall of Fame class since 2018 but she apparently has time to endanger the Notre Dame rivalry.

  • Still crickets from USC general manager Chad “Charmin” Bowden about the rivalry despite the fact he just came from Notre Dame.
  • And now for some history:

I guess it’s necessary to recount famous moments of the USC-Notre Dame rivalry, not least because some of the decision makers at USC seem oblivious to them.

  • Here’s the famous L.A. Times headline when Anthony Davis scored six touchdowns in 1972 against Notre Dame.
  • And here is Davis scoring a touchdown in the famous 55-24 victory over Notre Dame in 1974. USC overcame a 24-6 halftime deficit.

  • USC’s 16-14 victory over Notre Dame in 1931 was voted the greatest team achievement of the year by a group of Associated Press sports editors, beating out the St. Louis Cardinals’ seven-game victory over the Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series.

Johnny Baker’s field goal with less than two minutes remaining gave USC the victory and handed Notre Dame its first loss since 1928. The Trojans won the national championship that season. More than 300,000 attended a ticker-tape parade in Los Angeles to celebrate the Trojans’ victory.

Here’s some of Braven Dyer’s account of the game.

  • How often have you seen a scene like this? USC QB Craig Fertig hugs wide receiver Rod Sherman after the pair hooked up for the game-winning touchdown against Notre Dame in 1964. No. 76 is Bob Svihus.
  • When I was writing last week about USC pole vaulter/coach Vern Wolfe being a paratrooper for 3.5 years during World War II, it made me want to remember Trojan sprinter Foy Draper again.

Draper won a gold medal on the famous 1936 Olympic relay team featuring Jesse Owens (the other three members ended up being Trojans). He also held the world record in the 100-yard dash.

But Draper deserves to be equally remembered for his military service: He and two crew members died on Jan. 4, 1943 while he piloted an A-20 twin-engine attack bomber in The Battle of Kasserine Pass.

The pass was a 2-mile-wide gap in the Grand Dorsal chain of the Atlas Mountains in Tunisia. This was the first campaign in which the American Army engaged the armed forces of Nazi Germany, commanded under General Erwin Rommel.

Draper was one of the 3,300 American troops killed or wounded in the battle. He is buried in the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial in Carthage, Tunisia.

One other factoid: Draper was USC senior class president.

Draper, of course, is not in the USC Hall of Fame. Just another of the many oversights.

Jesse Owens, Ralph Metcalfe, Foy Draper and Frank Wycoff were members of the U.S. relay team at the 1936 Olympics. Draper and Wycoff were members of the USC track team. Metcalfe got his master’s degree at USC in 1939.

Windsor’s husband for 46 years was Jack Hupp, the MVP and captain of the 1936 USC basketball team. He was a two-time (1935-36) All-Pacific Coast Conference Southern Division first team forward. He is in the USC Hall of Fame.

Hupp has a USC basketball player engraved on the headstone he shares with Windsor.
