USC Morning Buzz: Some Coaches Have A Plan, Some Do Not

Lane Kiffin said this week he thinks the top 16 teams should make the College Football Playoff with no automatic qualifiers.

Whether you like it or not, it’s a plan.

Why doesn’t Lincoln Riley have a plan? He is the one doing the most bellyaching behind the scenes, jeopardizing the USC-Notre Dame series and hoping the Big Ten can bulldoze its way to as many automatic qualifiers as possible.

One question: When is Riley going to get USC to the point where a loss to Notre Dame would matter for the Trojans’ College Football Playoff hopes?

  • Here are the starting times that are known for USC games this season:
  • August 30: Missouri State at USC | BTN | 4:30 p.m. PT
  • September 6: Georgia Southern at USC | FS1 | 4:30 p.m. PT
  • September 13: USC at Purdue | CBS | 1230 p.m. PT
  • October 18: USC at Notre Dame | NBC | 4:30 p.m. PT
  • Friday, November 7: Northwestern at USC | FOX | 6 p.m. PT

  1. Riley doesn’t want to play Notre Dame

Jen Cohen doesn’t have the guts to tell Riley to pound sand

Wolf is going to beat on this dead horse until USC either renews the series or doesn’t

    Boring

  2. Scooter,

Jen Taco Lita Cohen is the crux to the problem of SC not wanting to sign a contract with nd. She is too weak in the knees. In order to regain confidence from the alumni, the fans, the boosters and even the chinese that don’t support SC football, she needs to say to the world, “SC will play anyone, anywhere, anytime, especially ND’. Then she needs to sign the agreement for the next 100 years right then and there with Riley and Bowden at her side. After the signing, she can tell riley to man up and start playing physical football or you can resign. But she is not strong and she is dragging SC down the drain. No need to say Fight On, because they are hallow and have no meaning or backing by her. So the new motto will be, “Soft On!!!!!”.

  3. Scooter,

This is what I wrote to Jen Taco Lita Cohen:

    Good afternoon,

I have been a fan of USC since Mike Garret won the Heisman trophy back in 1965.  That is 60 years of elation, sadness, discern, anger, and I would not change a thing.  I have been a season ticket holder to football and basketball for many years and have gone to many a baseball games along with track, water polo, and swimming events.  I have gone on the road to see many a game including but not limited to Stanford, CAL, Washington, Ugly, Nebraska, back to RFK, and the Medowlands to see SC football.  However, the best time I have had is to see ND vs SC.  I was at the 2005 nd game back at nd.  I was at the 1974 game with the great come back.  By far this is the best game ever played.  The east coast, the south, Midwest, and the West coast turn this game on to watch.  There is no other game like this one.

My only question is this, when will USC sign a new 100 year old agreement with ND to play in the greatest rivalry of all time?  There is no reason or excuse not to sign.  SC’s motto is, “Anytime and anywhere”. Get this done and signed.  There is no reason not to.  If not, Fight On will mean nothing.  If you don’t sign, then Fight On will have not the meaning after a hundred years of taking it to another level and never quitting. This motto will be just a paper tiger and will have not strength or backing or the meaning.  If you don’t sign, then you, and your staff will have personally destroyed the best game ever.  Get it signed.

      1. Gabby,

this is just an idea, but I think someone from this blog should write a letter to Jen Taco Lita Cohen and letting her know about this blog and how we feel about the sc vs nd situation. then with the people who write on the blog and having the permssion, the person can sign our names in. What do you think? We might even coherce that fake gabbby to sign it or we will just sign it for them, they, it, he, she, or hey you.

  4. KAM:  NCAA president Charlie Baker says he sees value in expanding the NCAA men’s basketball tournament to up to 76 teams and wants to reach a decision on the matter in the next few months.

Baker spoke Thursday during Big 12 spring meetings, where conference leaders are discussing everything from the multibillion-dollar revenue-sharing House settlement to complexities brought on by the transfer portal and name, image and likeness compensation.

DON: If the NCAA wants to keep expanding, why not dump the conference championships that nobody cares about and let all the teams in and begin the playoffs sooner?

  5. Scooter, this is SC’s response to my email and then my response:

    Paul,

Thank you for your continued support of USC Athletics. The rivalry game with Notre Dame is extremely important to USC. We are in a new era of college athletics, and this changed landscape requires us to evaluate every facet of our department and football program carefully and diligently to ensure all decisions position USC for success moving forward. We are continuing to engage with Notre Dame on extending the rivalry and awaiting clarity on the future of the College Football Playoff.

We appreciate your feedback and your support of the Trojans.

    Jen

This is my response to her:

    Good afternoon,

I am sorry, but ND is more important than worrying about college playoffs.  Playing nd only strengthens the schedule, the rankings, and the prestige of SC.  I find this disturbing that SC would worry more about the “Potential” to be in the playoffs than play ND.  If you play ND and beat them then SC is in the playoffs.  It is very simple.  That means you have to play physical football, which SC has not seen in over 20 years.  Football is smash mouth and SC DNA is to run the ball down the opponents throats.  That has not happened in over 20 years.

There are two simple things to do, sign with ND and play hard nose physical football by running the ball down the opponents throats and breaking their will.  That is what SC did in the past and are capable of doing again if you have the right head coach.

    1. It was nice of her to respond so quickly. I think SC extends the series with ND. If Riley wants to play the first game of the season, ND will agree to it. And the expanded playoffs with the top 4 teams in the BIG receiving automatic bids makes it even more likely that USC extends the series. Doesn’t matter what your non conference record is with automatic bids.

      1. Plow,

I took it as insincere. I think an AI wrote it and it was a blanket statement. I understand she has thousands that come in every day and she does not have the time or patience to write to each one.

      2. Your probably right PT. If not AI, then one of the many administrators in the athletic department. But, it is possible that Jen wrote it. One of my best friends wrote to Mike Garrett during the Paul Hackett era and complained about the team. He suggested that the team needed a more defensive minded coach. Garrett wrote back in his handwriting and said that he was disappointed in the team too and wanted to emphasize defense. He later fired Hackett and hired Pete Carroll.
