USC Morning Buzz: Who Will Speak Truthfully First?

It’s interesting that USC general manager Chad “Charmin” Bowden is non-committal about the Notre Dame series even though some of his former co-workers in South Bend want him to make a public statement.

The guy has plenty to say about everything but he is a politician when it comes to the greatest intersectional rivalry in college football. If Notre Dame employees thought he would say something for public consumption, they were probably in for a grave disappointment.

But plain talk only comes from South Bend. The athletic director and football coach at Notre Dame actually say they want the series to continue. USC’s athletic director and football coach dodge the issue.

  • Did you know the USC Board of Trustees features a former owner of the Seattle Mariners (Jeff Smulyan) and the daughter (Stephanie Argyros) of a former owner of the Seattle Mariners?

Smulyan bought the Mariners from George Argyros in 1989 for $76 million. Stephanie is co-CEO for the Argyros Family Foundation, which donated $10 million to the new football building under construction. She was at the groundbreaking ceremony last fall.

I mention all this because it’s a good time for some board members to express support for the USC-Notre Dame rivalry.

  • Paul Finebaum thinks most sports will suffer from athletes being paid directly. If he is right, it’s a shame.

  1. KAM: WTF? PAID-FOR “bionic shields” are being trucked in for the Los Angeles rioters. These cost around $60, each…and there are BOXES and BOXES of them being handed out. “That’s not the kind of thing that you buy in bulk if you don’t plan on doing something with it…” They are planning for a CLASH.

DON: Like Smack Water Jack, they are in the mood for a little confrontation.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ttfcrg-Yow

    1. Place the blame on Donald Trump’s pick for Attorney General— the blank-faced Pam Bondi. She isn’t even vaguely interested in following the money and filing RICO cases against the foreign billionaires conspiring to commit this grand scale sedition [if she did, she’d win and the penalty would consist of the U. S. government seizing these criminals’ homes, bank accounts, yachts and pen sets]. Instead this airhead is going after “anyone who spits on an officer of the law.” Let the local D. A. handle the low hanging fruit, Pam. Do your job and put an end to the financing of this ongoing sedition.

      1. You actually think the Democrat local DA in LA is going to prosecute any rioter? And the LAPD doesn’t want to stop and arrest the rioters.

      2. Priorities. Go after the foreign money people behind this and you’ll end it. Problem? It’s hard to do a RICO case —it takes brains and great investors. Easier to go after a demonstrator –which is a local responsibility.

Bottom line: The Justice Department has to go after those financing these demonstrations in over a dozen cities simultaneously —- and seize their wealth.

      4. karma — I worked on a RICO case with a U. S. Attorney very much like Pamela. She didn’t know the law, she wasn’t familiar with the exhibits [all 312 of them —the FBI never knows how to put a ceiling on their collection] and she ESPECIALLY didn’t understand how much the judge didn’t want to do a several month RICO case. When she was asked why we needed an entire RICO phase added to the trial she gave the dumbest answer you could imagine. The judge told her unless she had something new and different to say not to stand up again. When she stood up to address the court I whispered to her that the judge was forming opinions about us that we were going to have to live with for the rest of the trial —and if she didn’t have something new and different to say to please not say anything. She proceeded to repeat the same lame argument she used before. The Judge looked at her and said, “okay –the RICO case is gone let’s proceed with what’s left.” My guess is Pam Bondi is another dopey broad who doesn’t know HOW to evaluate, let alone put on, a RICO case.

    1. This has noting to do with the ND fiasco but in 1982 Jackie Sherrill went to Texas A & M and was paid $287,000 a year which even with inflation is only $980,000 today.

The funny thing is…. EVERYONE went nuts. The press, school Presidents, it was hilarious to read the reactions to this contract which I think was the highest at the time.

Read another article from 1980 from an AP writer talking about not wanting the NCAA to go to a playoff system. It would be to unwieldy, the bowls would suffer, the cost.

  3. –A Poster just wrote that the SC-ND controversy is a “Done deal,” meaning that the series will soon be finished. This would explain Bow-Down and Wiley’s reluctance to tell us what they know

-And it is all about trying to qualify for the Playoffs every year to have a chance at the National Championship. It becomes easier with Notre Dame out of the way

    1. I don’t really believe the “hurts our playoff chances” excuse. ” The playoff schedule will likely include automatic bids for the BIG. What matters to Riley is how the fan base will judge his effectiveness as a coach. USC fans view anything more than two losses in a season as a disappointment. If he plays ND every year and a BIG schedule that includes the potential of games against Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, and Penn State it will be difficult for him to win enough games to satisfy the fan base.

      2. Ha! Didn’t you read Scott’s headline? “USC isn’t afraid of anything!” Lincoln would Love to play Oregon, Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State and Notre Dame in a row —-he would just love it so much it wouldn’t be funny.

      1. Michael, the best thing about a 6-6 record is that it qualifies you for a Bowl game, and you have a good chance to win your last game, unlike the top-12 teams in the Playoffs where only 1 team wins its last game

    2. KAM: LA Mayor Karen Bass Threatens Feds: Withdraw From LA Or the Violence Will Escalate – So Trump Doubles Down with Threat to Invoke Insurrection Act

DON: The threat being made here by Mayor Bass is explicit. The Mayor of LA is effectively saying the mob violence is caused by the mere presence of ICE in the city and the violence against ICE will not stop unless federal law enforcement is withdrawn from the city. This is the definition of insurrection. LA and CA leadership demand the right to illegally import unlimited foreigners into America, to control America’s entire immigration policy by fiat — and if they are not so permitted they will allow mobs to target ICE with impunity

DON: Meet Benjamin France, aka “Benny.” Benny made a comment threatening to “hunt down every J6 and ICE agent” three days ago on X. Why should we care that Benny is threatening federal agents? Because Benny is an active duty Navy JAG Officer.
