Morning Buzz: Trying To Have It Both Ways On USC Season

I really try to avoid writing about Joel Klatt but he is so USC-centric (a Fox Sports tradition) that it is hard to ignore.

For example, he defended Lincoln Riley throughout last season and said he was being called an “apologist” for USC.

So I expected Klatt to come out swinging for USC this season like no other pundit. But on his recent podcast he wavered.

“Last year was incredibly underwhelming,” Klatt conceded.

And he makes USC’s game at Illinois on Sept. 27 the key to the season.

“If you lose to Illinois, now I don’t have a lot of faith you’re going to Nebraska, I don’t have a lot of faith you’re going to beat Notre Dame,” Klatt said.

“(A loss to Illinois) puts USC on a path towards like are they going to be 7-5 again? They cannot have another 7-5 season. So that’s why it’s like is this going to work with Lincoln Riley? I think that we find out in that September matchup with Illinois.”

Klatt also said he still believes Riley is a “home-run hire.”

So now Klatt can have it both ways. If USC wins, he can say he believed in Riley all along. And if USC goes 7-5, he will point out that he also predicted this.

What’s the downside? No one will call him out. That’s how it works in college football. Unless you are talking about the SEC, of course.

That fits with my hunch based on knowing some really bright people. He has a level of intelligence we rarely meet, which is why hostile interviewers come to grief.

        That same experienced-based hunch tells me that Cowardly Gabby and Sen. Elizabeth Warren aka Fauxcahontas’ IQ cannot be higher than the mid-80s. Telling the difference between 90 and 110 isn’t that easy. Social skills, education and what is being discussed cloud the differences. Only when someone has to learn something new does that show up. Maybe you can get in on the counselling with your fellow Sore Loserman Democrats: As reported by Punchbowl News, Jamie Raskin, the House Judiciary Committee Ranking Democrat Member, has enlisted psychologists to help Democrats on the panel cope with President Donald Trump’s first week in office. If the recruitment of psychologists by a House Democrat leader doesn’t convince skeptics that TDS is real, I’m not sure what would.

      The purpose of the session, according to multiple attendees, was to counsel Democrats about how to approach conflict and effectively combat what Raskin described as “authoritarian styles of speech.” Another attendee said Judiciary Democrats were also advised to avoid devolving into partisan mud-slinging — a more common hallmark of the House Oversight Committee, which Raskin previously led as the top Democrat.

      During a retreat last week for Judiciary Democrats, Raskin — the new ranking member of the key panel — hosted Jim Coan, a University of Virginia professor of psychology, and Hal Movius, a consultant who specializes in “negotiation,” “influence,” “emotion regulation,” “leadership” and “organizational development.” Coan’s “recent work emphasizes the neural systems supporting social forms of emotion regulation,” according to his bio with UVa. The retreat was held at the Library of Congress.
