If It’s The Fourth Of July, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

USC is expected to get a commitment today from four-star wide receiver Boobie Feaster of DeSoto, Texas.

Does Feaster remember Boobie Clark?

  • A celebration of life will be held for former USC assistant sports information director Jason Pommier at OB’s Pub & Grill in Manhattan Beach on July 26 from 1-3 p.m. The address is 3610 N. Highland Ave., Manhattan Beach, 90266.

Pommier, who worked at USC for 12 years, passed away last month. He was 55.

OB’s Pub features the “Julie’s Special Sandwich,” which is a roast beef and cheese sandwich on grilled sour dough bread that was a signature item for decades at the famous Julie’s restaurant, which was a landmark for USC students, athletes and coaches.

  • USC women’s basketball has added Gerda Raulusaityte, a 6-3 forward from Lithuania. She averaged 6.3 points per game at the recent Eurobasket championships.
  • And now for some history:
  • The Coliseum fireworks show on July 4, 1957 was popular as ever. Note the big, white scoreboard clock the Coliseum had the 1950’s and 60’s.
  • The controversial Dean Cromwell was USC’s track coach for 39 years.

One of my favorite stories was that USC won the NCAA title in 1943 and Cromwell didn’t even bother to go to the meet at Northwestern. It was USC and Cromwell’s ninth straight NCAA title so he probably didn’t care all that much that he missed it.

A four-man USC team won the NCAA title but ran out of money and needed help from other schools to to continue their trip to Randall’s Island, N.Y., for the AAU championships.

  • But have you ever heard how Cromwell got the job at USC?

In 1904, USC president George Finley Bovard hired Harvey Holmes as the football, track and field and baseball coach.

Under Bovard and Holmes, an athletic complex was designed and named Bovard Field (after USC’s first president, Marion McKinley Bovard). Bovard Field remained home of the USC baseball team until the Trojans moved to Dedeaux Field in 1974.

Holmes’ prized athlete was Charlie Richardson, who went to Santa Paula High School and then went to USC’s Preparatory School (a high school) before becoming a freshman at the College of Liberal Arts.

Richardson, who was 6-foot-4, starred in no fewer than five field events, which meant he could singlehandedly win a dual meet. Naturally, he was one of the most popular students on campus as track and field was at least a big as football in those days. Richardson was also well-like because of his personality and wanted to be a minister.

But in the summer of 1908, Richardson went swimming off Point Hueneme and drowned in a strong undertow.

A distraught Holmes immediately resigned but not before he recommended Cromwell as his replacement as the football and track and field coach.

  • This parade took place on July 4, 1942 in downtown Los Angeles on Broadway. The Newsreel Theater became the Tower Theater and is currently an Apple Store.

    The president was saved when he turned his head to read a chart on immigration, a chart he does not usually run until later in his presentation.

    By turning his head just slightly, President Trump was saved. Instead of a shot to the forehead he was hit in the ear by a deranged Trump-hater who we still know little about.

    President Trump’s work is not yet complete. And today we thank God that he is still here with us to save this country from the communist left who wants to strip us of our rights and tear down this great nation.

They either don’t believe in God or have redefined him so the birth of Christ at Christmas or his death and resurrection during Holy week are out. They are generally ingrates so the idea of celebrating a day of Thanksgiving for God’s bounty is out. They do not cherish individual liberty or freedom or our country’s history or greatness so Independence day doesn’t work. They tend to loathe the military and the sacrifices of our fighting men so Veteran’s day and Memorial day are gone.

      So what do they celebrate? How about pride month and Halloween, a pagan holiday. Some of the commies celebrate labor day but not the contributions of those working men who built the infrastructure of America. It is more about commie union organizers to them.

  9. Dean Cromwell was a track and field coach for 39 years. Nine consecutive NCAA titles. But our woke President decided that he was not worthy enough to have a track field named after him. Instead, rename it after a black women, Allyson Felix, who never ran track or coached a USC. It was the equitable thing to do.

The big 2 DT will collapse the pocket and Lucas Stewart Fountain Shelby will eat all day. We have never had 680 pds in the middle. Those edge rusher will be able shoot the gaps right to the QB. It’s all on LR now the CEO and just make your offense have balance. I would like to see you start out running to give your offense balance. Trying to satisfy all the WR making your offense predictable and boring. Please show your 26 class you mean what Bowden has change grow up and realize your not in Oklahoma I would hate you were the one that set us back for another decade. Let’s be honest the Illinois game starts the hot seat talk all year long. Like they say in some cultures fall in line soldier.     1. Agree Eric. The key is the interior defensive line. Love the transfers and Devon Tomkins. I think we will be a solid defense this year. I am also fairly confident in the offensive line and running game. The key is whether Jayden Maiava can fit into the Riley scheme and execute. If he does, we are a playoff team.
