I’m told USC intends to institute its campus-wide layoffs by August 1st.
It is believed the layoffs could hit 6 percent of the university employees. The university wants the layoffs to occur before school starts in August so it can start the year with a “clean slate.” Tell that to anyone who gets laid off. The idea, apparently, is to try and rebuild from the budgetary woes when the school year starts.
In an unusual move, I’m told that the deans of individual schools at USC must get their budgets approved by the Board of Trustees. No dean will be able to do anything for the coming school year until their budget gets approved.
It’s a rare hands-on moment for the Board of Trustees and a sign of the predicament Carol Folt left USC in as she departed last month.
- USC offensive lineman DJ Wingfield, a Purdue transfer who is supposed to start at guard this season, has not yet secured a waiver from the NCAA to be eligible, according to On3. Wingfield has hired an attorney in an attempt to secure the waiver.
- JuJu Watkins was named Big Ten female athlete of the year. Penn State wrestler Carter Starocci was named Big Ten male athlete of the year.
- And now for some history:

- Two USC greats — Jon Arnett and C.R. Roberts — celebrate after the Trojans upset No. 5-ranked Notre Dame, 42-20, at the Coliseum before 94,892 in 1955. They are about to pour Coke over each other.
A UNIQUE RIVALRY
- Find another rivalry with this respect/tradition. At the 1955 USC-Notre Dame game, bronze plaques featuring Knute Rockne and Howard Jones were unveiled. USC president Fred Fagg, Notre Dame president Father Theodore Hesburgh and L.A. County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn admire the tributes.

- Here’s an All-American meeting. USC wide receiver Hal Bedsole (19) and Oregon State wide receiver Vern Burke congratulate each other after the teams played in 1963. Both players were All-Americans.
USC defeated the Beavers, 28-22, but Burke caught 3 TD passes, which was quite a haul in those days.

PICTURE OF THE DAY
- Today is actress Sela Ward’s birthday so let’s go back to when she was an Alabama cheerleader. She even made Athlon’s SEC College Football Yearbook in 1977 (complete with sexist caption). Alas, Ward was a cheerleader in 1976 so she wasn’t part of the pep squad at the USC-Alabama game in 1977.

VIDEOS OF THE DAY
- Have you heard about the new production of “Evita” at London’s Palladium? The signature number “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” is actually performed on an outdoor balcony facing the street and crowds of around 1,500 gather each night in the West End to see the number.
- If you can erase the cringeworthy dancing of Mike Love from your brain after watching the opening credits of the 1965 film, “The Monkey’s Uncle” you are a better person than me.
- But I’m still showing this video because if you watch the credits closely, the film editor is former USC quarterback Cotton Warburton, fresh off his Oscar win for “Mary Poppins.”
- And the film’s co-producer is former USC wide receiver Ron Miller, who happened to be the son-in-law of Walt Disney (whose company produced the movie). Miller’s wife, Diane Disney, also went to USC.
- On the plus side, the other young Beach Boys are engaging along with Annette Funicello.
Jon Arnett and C.R. Roberts, 2 of the best together, enjoying a rare slaughtering of Notre Dame

Great Friday column, including Annette and the Beach Boys, who must have been paid a lot to sing “Monkey’s Uncle”.
One more tune from back in the day, the go-go dancers are totally out of sync, going off the rails, but that lends a certain “je ne sais quoi” to the routine:

Wingfield doesn’t have a great resume. El Camino Jr. college, to New Mexico State to Purdue. No all conference designations. His PFF rating is mediocre. Gave up a lot a hurries and a few sacks as a starter at Purdue. But Riley was very complimentary of his spring performance.

What did All-American Hal Bedsole say to the opposing All-American who had just caught 3 touchdown passes?– “Cool it, kid, you’re stealing my thunder”
My earliest sports memory was Reseda’s quarterback Hal Bedsole running roughshod through my Birmingham Braves’ team, he was a man among boys at that level

Bass complained yesterday that thousands of workers in the garment district were afraid to go to work because of the ICE raids. “It is effecting our local economy.” No kidding Karen. Virtually all of them are illegals and probably all of them make below the minimum wage with no benefits. The LA policy – we only enforce labor laws when the companies appear to be legitimate and capable of paying fines.

KAM: There are hundreds of THOUSANDS of children in California who are being exploited for their labor or s*#ually exploited as part of s*# trafficking.
This administration is liberating these children and helping reunify them with their parents back in their home country. I don’t know of anybody except the governor of California and Cowardly Sparrow Gabby who would argue that a marijuana plantation is an essential component of America’s food supply chain.
Everywhere you look in California, you see industrial child exploitation on a massive scale, an industrial scale.
DON: It’s one of the great crimes in human history. Over 500,000 children were illegally trafficked into the country under the previous administration.
“When we’ve gone and looked for these children, the addresses that the US government provided, in other words, the records that the government kept under Joe Biden, are all fake. Nobody ever checked if the addresses were real. Nobody ever checked if the sponsors were real. Nobody ever checked if they were really even relatives or parents or relations or safe.”

Calling a girl Honey was once a compliment. But then again I am the board misogynist. Perhaps today women are complimented if you ask them to help change your tire.
