USC Sunday Buzz: Sometimes You Have To Wait To Be Right

Ten months ago, I sent out a tweet mentioning that Knox Kiffin, the son of Lane Kiffin, was going to transfer from Palos Verdes High School and move to Mississippi this year.

Shortly afterward, I got a message from Knox asking me to delete the tweet and telling me he was not going to transfer. I deleted the tweet mainly as a courtesy to him because he was only a freshman in high school and it wasn’t that newsworthy to me.

Why would he transfer? Palos Verdes has a star QB, Ryan Rakowski, who is only a year older than Kiffin and isn’t going to get beaten out for the quarterback job.

Well, I didn’t realize it until yesterday but Knox has transferred to Oxford High School in Mississippi. And . . . I also noticed yesterday that Lane Kiffin did an interview last November where he said Knox would be moving to Oxford for this season.

So I’m not really sure why it was some kind of secret when I tweeted it. But now he’s a QB at Oxford High School. Probably not quite as good as Palos Verdes, which was the California Division 2-A state champions last season.

  1. He is moving from Palos Verdes to Oxford, Mississippi. I hope this 15 year old knows what he is doing. My prediction is he returns to California for his junior year in high school.

    2. Because the Sadducees, the Jewish sect that controlled the Temple, did not believe in an afterlife. They did not believe in Heaven or Hell. They only considered the Torah as a valid source of teaching and the Torah does not mention Heaven or Hell. And if you throw in with the Jews you are rejecting Jesus, our savior who died for the sins of mankind and offers us the new covenant – eternal life for those who love him.

      1. Hi Plow — I consider myself a Christian…. and I believe in the New Covenant….and I believe Jesus did offer hope to all who kept His central commandments [love God above all things and love your neighbor as yourself]…but.. I also accept the wisdom expressed in Jesus’ Gospel of the Good Samaritan: the one who does good deeds is a good man.

      2. Agree MG. I think there is a path to salvation for people who do God’s will without necessarily knowing God. I recall that JPII said something to that effect although sections of the CCC would seem to contradict it.

“Then the King will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, anything you did for even the least of my people here, you also did for me.” It emphasizes that acts of kindness and service towards the marginalized are considered as done for Christ himself. Don’t see how Christ would reject such people.

    2. The phrase “everyone did what was right in his own eyes” is a recurring theme in the Book of Judges in the Bible. It describes a period in Israel’s history where there was no centralized authority, leading to a lack of shared moral standards and a reliance on individual judgment. This resulted in a cycle of sin, oppression, repentance, and deliverance.

      3. I don’t know in which part of the Old Testament these words are found …but I like them [and I wasn’t above quoting them in closing argument]: “The Lord did not put the Truth above the sky so you would have to fly after it, interpret it and, then. carry it out, or under the sea so that you would have to swim after it, interpret it and, then, carry it out…. He placed it in your heart so all you need do is carry it out.”

I totally agree most of us use our “conscience” as a basis for justifying selfish, self indulgent behavior …. but if you really listen to that voice inside, you’ll do the right thing. [I think I may have finally arrived at the point where I know the difference between lying to myself about what is the right thing to do …and what is REALLY the right thing to do: do the thing that is hard, not the thing that is easy; don’t be afraid to choose the path that involves sacrifice, not pleasure]…..

      4. Michael, you are spot on. The writing you quoted is from Deuteronomy 30. A very powerful passage. It was the first reading of today’s mass. And the story of the good Samaritan was the gospel reading. Always amazes me how often the readings seem to deliver exactly what I need to read at a particular stage of my life.

The phrase “Trump always chickens out” in relation to Iran likely refers to perceptions of Donald Trump’s approach to foreign policy, particularly regarding Iran.
