USC Saturday Buzz: Remembering A Trojan Great

Today is the birthday of former USC basketball player Alex Hannum.

He played in the NBA for eight seasons but became better known as a coach, winning NBA titles in 1958 with the St. Louis Hawks and 1967 with the Philadelphia 76ers. He won the 1969 ABA title with the Oakland Oaks.

Hannum was the first NBA coach to lead two different franchises to a championship. He was also the first head coach to lead teams to both an NBA and ABA title (the second was fellow Trojan Bill Sharman).

He was a star player at Hamilton High School in Los Angeles. Hannum then went to USC where his teammates were Sharman and Tex Winter. His USC coach was Sam Barry, who invented the midcourt line and the triangle offense.

Hannum was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1998.

  • USC baseball has received a commitment from Brock Slaton, an outfielder from Tulane. He hit .271 with 2 home runs and 15 RBI last season.

  2. I watch Hannum coach the Oakland Oaks against the LA Stars in 68/69. Nobody attended Stars games so they gave away tickets to the local youth programs. Remember Rick Barry playing. I think he is incredibly underrated. One of the best of all time.

    So he’s not getting any sympathy. He’s got a first class ticket directly to the depths of hell the moment he chokes on a KFC chicken wing, and that’s still him getting off easy. Even in that scenario, the any sympathy we would have would be for the devil.
