Do I think USC will finish ninth in the Big Ten like the media predicted in yesterday’s Cleveland Plain-Dealer poll?
No. For one thing, I don’t think USC will finish below Iowa. But the poll is instructive because it demonstrates that while USC might be a better team this season, Lincoln Riley has completely tainted the current image of the program.
After the past two seasons, Riley’s lost so much credibility that media are skeptical even if there are signs of improvement at certain positions (along with questions at other positions, to be fair).
This is how it usually works in college football. When you underachieve for a couple seasons, people won’t reward you until you start winning again.
The oddsmakers are more reliable and still have USC’s over/under at 7.5 games, the same as last year.
- The great Crown basketball tournament that USC played in last season is underdoing a reduction. It will be only eight teams in 2026 after having a 16-team field in 2025.
Naturally, the Big East, Big 12 and Big Ten will get six spots, with only two wild card spots.

Phil Steele has USC tied for 5th in the Big Ten. USC won’t do worse than that —and probably will do much better. The thing that’s dragging us down in popularity polls, as Scott points out, is people think Lincoln will panic in the last 7 minutes of the last quarter and produce another Tulane or Penn State or Maryland screw-up.

Oddsmakers have the over/under at 7.5 wins. That’s depressing. If Riley only wins 7 games, he will definitely be on the hot seat.

Maybe, maybe not. There’s an interim president right now, and we don’t know who’s going to be selected to succeed Folt. Then there is the issue of whether Jen Cohen gets along with her new boss or not – she may tell her agent to begin making inquiries. Remember, Gomer kept his job for two more years after Folt started, even though a lot of people wanted him gone after the UCLA debacle in 2018.
Prediction: Riley is safe through the 2027 season, no matter how mediocre the program is in the meantime. There’s simply too much inertia to overcome, not to mention the size of the buyout.
