USC Morning Buzz: Will Lincoln Riley Make News Today?

Lincoln Riley will speak at Big Ten media day at 12:30 p.m. today.

I’m sure it will likely be the usual talking points unless someone pushes him to speak about the USC-Notre Dame series. Remember, it was at last year’s Big Ten media day where he hinted he was open to ending the rivalry.

“If you get in a position where you got to make a decision on what’s best for SC to help us win a national championship vs. keeping that, shoot, then you got to look at it,” Riley said. “And listen, we’re not the first example of that. Look all the way across the country. There has been a lot of other teams sacrifice rivalry games. And I’m not saying that’s what’s going to happen.

“But as we get into this playoff structure, and if it changes or not, we’re in this new conference, we’re going to learn something about this as we go and what the right and the best track is to winning a national championship, that’s going to evolve.”

Now there has been a backlash to the Riley position in the past 12 months so maybe today he will be more politically correct with his answer.

  • USC will open training camp on Wednesday at Howard Jones Field.

  2. The telltale sign is in his verbiage– ‘…what’s best for SC to help us win a national championship…” and what is SC’s “best track to winning a national championship…” and “a lot of other teams sacrifice rivalry games…”

    Winning “national championships” these days is a long-shot at best, with even favored Penn St having only a 1 chance in 6 of making it.

    It is the games during the season that are the “Super Bowls’ for college teams, such as SC-Notre Dame

  5. –As was true with the breakup of the Pac-12 being about money, the possible breakup of SC-ND could be about money. The rivalry isn’t what it used to be and probably doesn’t reap ratings much better than many other games, so ‘why not bury it’ is the possible thinking of tv execs

  7. Ohio St players, who have been around loud stadiums such as Michigan’s, say the loudest stadium they played in in 2024 was at Oregon’s Autzen Stadium. “It was realy rocking” is how they put it.

    Anybody who has experienced Oregon’s stadium will tell you that it is eerie how it will be relatively quiet until the opposing team has the ball, and then what emerges is the instant roar of 60,000 fans sounding as if one giant voice

  8. Riley doesn’t make the decision on whether to extend the ND series. Jen Cohen and perhaps the interim President does. Can’t see them dropping the game – too much heat from the donors and alumni.

    Trump’s phony math didn’t stop there. “We will have reduced drug prices by 1,000 percent, by 1,100, 1,200, 1,300, 1,400, 700, 600; not 30 or 40 or 50 percent but numbers the likes of which you’ve never even dreamed of before,” he added later.

      5. I basically agree, Gabby. There is one problem I see as a former prosecutor, though: Once a criminal trial begins it has to end in one of the following ways: A very public dismissal, a very public hung jury, a very public not guilty or a very public guilty. Trump will own the result.

      8. If the case is brought in D.C there is no way the prosecution gets a conviction. In the case brought against Marc Elias for lying to Federal agents – “I’m not representing Hillary Clinton”, he denied that he made the statement and the prosecution had it in a text message. They also obtained his firm’s records which showed that he billed Hillary for the meeting with the agent. Still, the defense was acquitted in 95% liberal D.C.
