Wednesday Buzz: USC Holds First Practice Today

USC holds its first practice today at 7 a.m. at Howard Jones Field.

Lincoln Riley and new strength coach Trumain Carroll will speak to the media after practice.

It’s an interesting choice to start off with the strength coach. Riley will no doubt say Carroll has transformed the program. But will Riley admit his long-time strength coach, Bennie Wylie, was removed by general manager Chad Bowden.

That’s the actual news. How Bowden has imposed his authority on the program and Riley.

Otherwise, expect lots of quotes about what a great job Carroll has done.

  1. KAM: In 2025, Los Angeles has been experiencing a rise in illegal street takeovers, which are often linked to criminal activities such as looting. Authorities are actively working on strategies to reduce these events through community engagement and enforcement measures- AI

    Recent IncidentsNotable Events

    • Weekend Looting Spree: A series of looting incidents occurred over a weekend, coinciding with illegal street takeovers. Stores like WSS and T-Mobile were targeted during these events.
    • Locations: The looting incidents were reported near street takeover sites, indicating a troubling connection between the two

DON: Generally the police do nothing about it because they are inevitably outnumbered. Now it seems the people who attend these impromptu parties have decided police disinterest will extend to the looting of nearby stores as well.

In fact, you have to wonder if the sideshows aren’t being set up at intersections where there’s a nearby store worth looting. The car stunts are starting to look like a cover for the real action. Some reports say a handful of people were arrested in connection with these takeovers, but it’s a tiny fraction of the number of people involved.

    1. In Oakland it’s estimated there are more than 10,000 hardcore activists [well funded, well organized]…. there are only a few thousand police …. understanding that, the police don’t lift a finger in downtown riot situations [soon Los Angeles will be in the same situation….if it isn’t already]…..

      1. Los Angeles has seen a rise in crime and lawlessness, with incidents of mass looting and violent robberies becoming more common. Public officials are criticized for prioritizing the interests of lawbreakers over law-abiding citizens, contributing to a sense of insecurity in the city, per City Journal.

    1. Our local Hawaiian station put it like this, “We’ve been warning people something like this was coming [A Russian earthquake?]…. Well, it’s on the way. And it looks serious. I’M NOT SAYING WE’LL GET 100 FOOT WAVES AND THOUSANDS WILL DIE…..BUT IT LOOKS BAD.” THEY WERE SO UNHAPPY WHEN THE 6 INCH WAVES HIT THAT THEY TURNED OFF THE COASTAL CAMERAS….AND SAID STUFF LIKE, “WE’RE SEEING WAVES IN UNUSUAL PATTERNS ROLLING IN!!” Yes, 6 inch waves coming in unusual patterns —and sirens were going off every half hour until 7:20 pm …. with phone alerts every half hour… right up till the 6 inch waves “poured in”……

The real failure was the mental health system that had him on their radar for years: he had a documented mental health history, including two Mental Health Crisis Holds in Nevada in 2022 and 2024, which allowed authorities to detain him if he was deemed a danger to himself or others. In the olden days he would have been committed to a mental hospital.

    1. KAM: In the early 1900s, football was extremely dangerous. In 1905 alone, 19 college players died from injuries sustained during games, and many more were seriously injured. The sport was known for its brutality, with little protective equipment and a focus on physical strength.

President Theodore Roosevelt, a fan of football, recognized the need for reform. In October 1905, he summoned representatives from major universities, including Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, to the White House. Roosevelt aimed to reduce the violence in the game while preserving its spirit.

The discussions led to significant rule changes that made football safer:

Forward Pass-Allowed teams to advance the ball without relying solely on physical strength.

First Down- Distance Changed from 5 yards to 10 yards, encouraging more strategic play.

Neutral Zone- Established a space between offense and defense to reduce collisions.

DON: These reforms helped transform football into a more strategic and less violent sport, ensuring its survival and popularity in American culture. Roosevelt’s actions are credited with saving football from potential extinction due to its dangerous nature.

      DON: Overview of the Incident

USC football coach Lincoln Riley banned journalist Luca Evans from covering the team for two weeks. The ban was imposed after Evans reported on a conversation between two players that occurred before an official media availability session. USC claimed this violated their media policies.

      Reasons for the Ban

Perceived Control: The decision was seen as an overreaction, with critics labeling it as an example of excessive control by college football coaches.

Violation of Media Policies: USC stated that Evans should not have documented the players’ pre-press-conference interactions.

It is a shame that Riley does not have open practice like Carroll did. I enjoyed going to see Sc practice. I even got Reggie Bush’s autograph. Riley has ruined the atmosphere of being a fan.

Also, I hope they get rid of that dj that plays that crap before the game. That dude is a nusicance.

      1. Michael,

I will be judgemental, Riley does not get SC. He does not understand that if he were to be more extroverted and to be more open, then SC and the fans would accept him. He does not have Carroll’s personality, but if he can be decisive and welcome the fans then he could have SC, Hollywood, and L.A. eating out of his hands. If he doesn’t want that, then he better step up his coaching because it sucks.
