USC Saturday Buzz: It’s A Slow Burn Start To Camp

USC holds a closed practice today.

So far, there’s been a lot of general platitudes from Lincoln Riley: The team is in the best condition ever, the practice was physical, etc. Blah, blah, blah. He doesn’t care when he compliments the team’s condition he is indicting himself and his former strength coach.

Riley is also claiming true freshmen will get a chance to play. What about at quarterback? We’ll see.

When will get some news? For example, there are some spots like linebacker and safety where positions are still up for grabs. The problem is Riley might not even tell the public who wins certain jobs before the first game. But at least we know Micah Banuelos is getting some first-team reps on the offensive line!

  • USC received a commitment from four-star offensive guard Breck Kolojay of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
  • Defensive tackle Viliami Moala committed to USC last September. He committed to Oregon last October. He committed to North Carolina yesterday,

    1. I’ve never seen the baby rat…I consider myself lucky. I have seen ads to sign up for UFC fighting and lawyers who will litigate a lemon car claim. I am still hoping for American Eagle Jeans…

  1. Sorry for multiple posts, but trying to paste more than one video results in the moderator moderating. Here is LB coach Rob Ryan, who has a ton of NFL experience as D-coordinator. I get the feeling that there is no middle ground with this fella, it will either be great or bad.

With all the coaching staff turnover, I can’t help but get the feeling that this is like what happened with Helton.

      1. An all-time great!

Some others at the same level IMHO:

        Naked Gun

        Caddyshack

        Blazing Saddles

        Airplane

Sad to say, they are all oldies. So many of their jokes would be verboten in today’s Hollywood. Like the opening scene from Animal House…

The Linda I fell in love with [at 16 years of age I asked her to marry me—but she wisely asked “aren’t we too young?”] is younger and lives in one of those beach towns around Manhattan Beach. She was extraordinary too!

  2. I’m tired of talk of Maiava keeping his intensity not low or high as key to 2025. Put Maiava on field with no linemen, then high school linemen, then all freshmen, then spotty linemen they now have. The problem isn’t Maiava it is a team problem. He must run for his life on pass plays. Problem is Riley can’t design offense around strengths/weaknesses. He needs a running game first but wants to groom the next Heisman. It was offense that lost close games last year (except Michigan). You can’t put a square peg in a round hole. Let’s see what Moss does this year at Louisville.

    1. I guess what Wayne is telling us is: It won’t look real terrific for Lincoln if Moss wins the Heisman behind a better o-line…..

  3. –That really is sobering news, that the Trojan offensive line still is not up to par, let alone great, so it is “Watch out below, Maiava!

    1. KAM: Losing 3 starters including Monheim was a huge blow.

      Key Departures

Mason Murphy: Another experienced starter, Murphy has also left the program, transferring to Auburn. His exit adds to the challenges facing USC’s offensive line.

Emmanuel Pregnon: The starting offensive guard has entered the transfer portal after a successful career at USC. He played 25 games over the last two seasons and was recognized as a Second Team All-Big Ten member in 2024. His departure is significant as he was considered one of the Trojans’ best offensive linemen.

DON: No depth and no experience. We need a Wild Bunch defense to emerge and win games for us this season.

      1. Gabby —It kinda sounds like you’re placing all your chips on the half of the team NOT run by Lincoln Riley, yes?

      2. KAM: Yes the defense can create turnovers to shorten the field for our challenged offense.

DON: And score on interception returns . We need special teams to contribute too to make up the difference.

    1. KAM: It took just 75 minutes for President Trump to get what he wanted out of the European Union.

When they returned, Trump was triumphant. Europe agreed to buy $750 billion in American energy products, invest $600 billion in new money in the US and purchase additional US military equipment, according to the terms of the preliminary agreement.

Tariffs on many American exports will drop to zero. Duties on most European goods coming into the US rise to 15%.

“I think it’s the biggest deal ever made,” Trump proclaimed.

The stated terms of the tariff deal appeared to be remarkably lopsided in favor of the US. Von der Leyen suggested that the only real concession from the Americans was that Trump would not impose 30% tariffs he had threatened.

      DON: WINNING!

      1. In order to REALLY “win” Trump needs to dig up some serious dirt on Chairman Powell and get him to resign.

      1. Once –when I was studying at UCLA Law Library —one of the male students drew a ‘nasty’ little drawing on his desk accompanied by the caption “The lips that never speak.” We both laughed …and then he left. Immediately a female student took the desk, saw the drawing and caption…and wrote on the desk “drawn by a mind that never thinks.”

      2. I think Jordan Petersen once said that lipstick, blush, and presumably enhanced lips are a sign of sensuality. It suppose to focus the male on the mouth as a sexual organ with the colors mimicking a face flush from an orgasm. Older women experience a thinning of the lips and enhancing them may give them a rejuvenated look. You will only find this type of information on a USC sports blog.
