USC Morning Buzz: A Great Game That Got Away

USC opens the season in 25 days against Mighty Missouri State.

Remember USC was going to play Mississippi in this slot until that series got canceled. One excuse for the cancellation was that both teams would be moving toward a nine-game conference schedule. Well, the SEC still hasn’t done that.

Imagine how much more exciting it would have been to welcome Lane Kiffin and Co. on August 30? Even I would have been excited about this game.

Of course, the USC-Mississippi series was agreed a year before Lincoln Riley got hired at USC. And we all know how Riley feels about playing good non-conference games.

Remember, last year, he tried to wiggle out of playing LSU. Meanwhile, USC season-ticket holders will pay for Missouri State and Georgia Southern as the non-conference home games this season.

  • Here’s an example of a stock training camp quote from USC QB coach Luke Huard on quarterback Jayden Maiava.

“You can just feel Jayden being more and more comfortable in his own skin, and more comfortable being one of the leaders of this football team and operating this offense,” Huard said.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

  • Luke Huard is the quarterbacks coach at USC. His nephew, Sam, is a reserve QB at USC. His niece, Holly, is an executive assistant in the USC athletic dept. Sam and Holly’s father is former Washington QB Damon Huard.

  1. Scott doesn’t appreciate stock training camp quotes. So here is a more provocative one from Bull Durham.

“He has a million dollar arm and a five cent head.”

    1. Hope we’re not talking about Jayden.

Note to Plow: It kept hitting me, as we talked yesterday about the Bar and CPA exams, that I read something online about Lincoln failing the Head Coach Exam 3 times before he finally passed it in 2025.

  2. I hope Huard misspoke when he said “Jayden is becoming more comfortable being one of the leaders of this football team.”

    He should be THE leader.

Here are highlights from practice. Watching the lack of intensity makes me nervous:

      1. P. S.

Can you even begin to imagine what it would look like if we played Notre Dame at this speed…?

      2. Nice work, 67! Posting that practice video caused the Trojans to drop from 29th to 69th in the just released Amended Coaches Poll….

  3. As General Patton would have said “You know what’s wrong with this team? A blind man could see it in a minute: We have a defensive coordinator and an offensive coordinator…. but no head coach…”

      1. Here’s my solution: Take all the biggest guys on the d-line and put them on the o-line….then take the biggest linebackers and put them on the d-line….. then take the biggest corners and safeties and play them at linebacker….after that…. maybe just forget about the back four…..

    1. Based on the pace of that practice video you put up, Lincoln’s already heard the bad news …and will spend the fall just chatting & joking with players…..

  4. Plow — The Bar Exam [back when we took it] not only involved mastering writing and reasoning skills —- but answering complicated, crossover questions [e. g., reciprocal negative easement questions mixed in with anticipatory breach of contract issues] in woefully short periods of time…..and doing this 7 hours a day for three days straight [fortunately, you could go back to your hotel and locate a lonely female bar taker in the hotel restaurant at dinner time]……

    1. MG: I didn’t sleep well. At the lunch break on the third day, I laid down on the front lawn at the Church of Christ Scientist in Pasadena, and collapsed into a sleep. When I woke up I had 5 minutes to get to the exam room and had to sprint to make it.

    2. One year in the mid eighties, the California Bar had a 28% passage rate for the February exam. I doubt that the CPA exam had anything approximating that number.

      1. I just asked A.I. if anyone ever died taking the California Bar Exam …and it told me to reach out to school counselors for help……

[By the way, I asked A. I. if Huma Abedin was hooked up to Soros’ son solely in order to give him globalist corruption lessons …and I thanked it for giving me a b.s. globalist answer in advance…. which it did: “They are two young people in love…”]

  5. KAM: Two of the countries largest banking giants ‘debanked’ President Trump under pressure from the evil Senile Joe Biden Regime, The New York Post reported.

Earlier Tuesday, President Trump told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that Bank of America and JP Morgan rejected him as a customer after he tried to “deposit a billion dollars plus.”

″[Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan] said, ‘We can’t do it,’” Trump said.“So I went to another one, another one, another one. I ended up going to small banks all over the place. I mean, I was putting $10 million here, $10 million there.”

It was later reported that JP Morgan and Bank of America kicked President Trump off their platforms after pressure from Senile Joe Biden’s banking regulators.

DON: Senile Joe is a evil creep.

  6. I don’t understand why SC puts OL-men with 20% pass blocking % as starters? They might as well try freshmen (say Dunn or Payne) for first 4 games. Ask any honest OL coach – OL only as good as its weak link.
